Hello, The one I got has worked flawlessly for months. I'd recommend just returning it to Amazon as defective. They are good about returns that are truly defective.

Does this generate enough heat to loosen rusted nuts on bolts?

It will work, just have to hold it there a while to get enough heat into the nut. This is more of a household low heat nozzle.

I have not tried melting lead, bought this torch to make up new copper water line using lead free solder, but years ago prior to conversion to lead free solder I melted plenty of 50/50 lead. You should have no problem.
