Defective cap nut - no threads!
I had to use a cap nut from the hardware store as the one on the device was unthreaded. Such an unusually weird manufacturing error!

Fits correctly. I chose those over the name brand because the handle has removable cap on end, allowing storage! On a whale watch, it is a good place to hide $ for tips.
