Compares favorably to the far more expensive Old Holland
The class I'm taking sends out the supplies, and we're using Old Holland, which is arguably the most expensive oil paint on the planet. I picked this up for a Creative Bug class on doing an oil painting a day for 30 days and I'm so glad I did. This was a lot easier to work with. For one thing the consistency of the paint was superior. It's just a bit denser than toothpaste without adding any oil, and it takes up oil reasonably gradually, so you can take it to the point where you can manipulate it without it suddenly going to a wash. The consistency is ... well... consistent across all the colors. For another thing the pigments seem to me to be more pure. If I mix the colors they come out really close to what I expect. See, if the blue is more blue with yellow then when you try to mix purple you get a muddy color. If it's blue and nothing but blue, mixed with red and nothing but red, you get a vibrant purple. At least that's my understanding, and that's what I'm experiencing here. I will admit, I've used their watercolors (they are the gold standard for watercolors) and their acrylics and their gouache before, so I am familiar with their color lineup so that might have helped. They just make really great paint across the board so I keep going back to them. These seem to dry a little slower than Old Holland, but I don't know if one is unusually slow or the other unusually fast. I can only compare the two. Normally, that's just the way oil is. It's known to be slow drying. For the class, I switched paints and didn't say anything. I got better results when I started with this paint and more positive feedback from my teachers. The super expensive paint can sit in the box. I'm using the good stuff - Winsor and Newton.

Great starter set for oils
Used with my miniature painting projects to augment acrylic paints. Great color range to start with and perfect for learning and experimentation. High pigmentation lends itself to making washes (by adding mineral spirits to thin).

Never let me down!
I found that this oil paint has the texture I love and the only company I use from now on. It blends well even with other oil paints. So to me its a.win win!

Great quality paints, some different color selections should have been included.
Great oil paints, the quality of Winsor & Newton Artists colors really shows through. The paints are thick and pigment is really strong in these colors. This is a good intro set for approaching most subject matter and at around $70 its good value, I brought mine when it was $58.My main issue is with the selection of some of colors that are included. They have a lot of winsor color choices in the set like winsor yellow or winsor blue. I would have rather had a more popular color included such as cadmium yellow light. Also the intro set has Indian red which I never used, would have been better to include burnt sienna or a cadmium red since the only red in this set is Crimson Alizarine which is darker and you need a brighter red.Again the paints them selves are great quality but you'll have to probably buy a cadmium yellow lemon, cadmium red and burnt sienna tubes separately to have a good range of color when painting. I felt the intro set by Gamblin had a better color selection so I might have brought that instead to start out.

It was a gift
All I can tell you is that my granddaughter was thrilled with the paints. I don't paint so I can't tell you.

Just As Described
This set was a gift to my husband, along with all the other oil colors Winsor & Newton has. He used this brand in an oil painting class he recently took, and they were what the art instructor used and recommended.
