Q: What is the difference between the organic and the standard fertilizer? Is one any better than the other? Would I have to buy soil to use with this?

Yes you need to buy potting mix, but there are some kits sold on their website that include this. Be sure to buy potting mix that is for containers and not reg. soil that is meant for the ground. Potting mix is much lighter. As for the fertilizer, the difference is that it's organic vs reg, is the ingredients, organic fertilizer is more natural, non chemical. Standard fertilizer contains synthetic chemicals. It's really about what you prefer when it comes to the food you eat. I prefer all organic, so I bought the organic kits on earthbox's website that included everything I need.

Q: what soil do you recommend buying?

Garden soil with peat or peat substitute is good. Using plant food/fertilizer is a top treatment to the soil. Instructions should come with it. I have used earth boxes for years and love them

Q: Does it have watering holes?

I'm not sure what you mean by watering holes. There is no drainage in the bottom. Drainage is afforded with a grate that's installed in the bottom of box. There is a reservoir that you will fill with water to keep your plants hydrated.

Q: Can you plant lettuce and/or spinach?

Yes you can. Follow the diagram and it will show you what you can plant. In a junior it is mostly herbs or strawberries. Lettuce would be okay. The full-size earth boxes could hold at least 6 plants

I love these Earthboxes

I love these Earthboxes. I love the color, size and the self-watering aspect of it. However, my garden s**ks because of the damn insects. Anyway I now have 3 of these smaller Earthboxes and will likely buy one more.
