Stylish and fun
Kim Novak and James Stewart partnered in this and in Hitchcock's 'Vertigo', although the age gap is a little grating (apparently Stewart himself was uncomfortable about it) the charm of both actors carries things off. Novak is an urban witch, she runs a stylish store accompanied by her gorgeous cat Pyewacket. Stewart, a publisher, stumbles into her life after renting a room upstairs. The film follows their bumpy romance and their relationship is beautifully complemented, and complicated, by Jack Lemmon, playing Novak's brother and Elsa Lanchester as her somewhat 'dotty' aunt. The film sometimes is a little flat, the script could have done with more work but the costumes, setting, the whole look and feel of the film are so stylish and seductive that it doesn't seem to matter. Loved it. Would also make a great Halloween film for those who prefer elegance and charm to gross-out horror or violence.

You cannot not watch any James Steward film!
No matter what the storyline you can't go wrong with these films. The actors and actresses always brought something new to the table. You can hear what they are saying, there is always a joke element as they were their characters were well known from newspapers or the little news we sometimes had. Anyone involved from the call boy to the scriptwriter worked together and we will never see the likes of this sort of thing again. We rarely saw or knew about the background arguments and problems and the film industry was so tightly controlled you just enjoy your weekly if not nightly flea pit experience, some people went every night and new all the words to a T. Bell, Book and candle was yet another you must watch.

Review for upgrade to Blu ray from DVD only...and its top marks!
I love this movie so much! You never see it on TV or the movie channels. Anyway, I have the DVD already but its very grainy and not great sound on the one I have, so I thought I would try this, for english speaking you just go to the sound menu and select english and you select off for the subtitles and away you go. The quality of picture against my DVD is amazingly better and for an older movie I would say this is really good! Very clear intact and the sound is great. I am really happy that I went for the upgrade and wont look back. Recommended for anyone wanting the best copy possible of this magical old gem of a movie!

Relax, take time and savour.
Lovely old (1958) film. The actors are superior to the film itself and maybe some of them could have been used more effectively. Not fast paced but does contain some sparkling dialogue. Love Elsa Lancaster (Bride of Frankenstein) who manages somehow to very slightly underplay a very over the top character - now that's acting, but what a waste of Hermione Gingold. The storyline shows its age a little in attitude. But still to be taken slowly and savoured.

Wonderful cast full of character, story a bit weak.
This DVD arrive on time and in good condition. This was a very peculiar movie with a very weak story line. The stars were amazing and the cast generally were amusing and different. Not quite what I expected but OK for a wet afternoon and my knitting.

Now that's a witch!
What a great movie! The story of a witch and her upstairs neighbour, it's not like you'd expect. It's certainly not as sweet and domestic as the TV show 'Bewitched'. There's a dark, slighty nasty edge to it that I found refreshing. When this witch casts a spell -- she doesn't wiggle her nose. She falls into a trance and hums a rather unearthly tuneless incantation while staring into the eyes of her cat. It's all very agreeably sinister for a romantic comedy made in the 50s. Definitely worth a watch.

Soothing to the soul and eyes
Fabulous story about how love works mysteriously and across boundaries. Excellent costumes and set made this movie not feel at all dated.
