DOLPHIN SPOUT IS PRETTY BUT THE PRODUCT IS JUNK!!
HEADLINE: DOLPHIN SPOUT IS PRETTY BUT THE PRODUCT IS JUNK!! THE 1 STAR IS FOR THE DOLPHINREVIEW:Looks like the company invested more of its effort in wrapping each major component is cloth bags than in quality control. Two of these were purchased for a double sink master bathroom. The quality of the components, completeness of the package and the engineering/manufacturing is very poor:Let me make one thing clear, I have installed at least 50 faucets of all brands and types over 30 years with very few issues other than dealing with manufacturing defects or difficult to get at installations. I have a background in manufacturing and was a machinist in the Army so these issues are not foreign to me.1. It doesn't come as a complete packaged product, it comes in a USPS box with (most) of the parts just tossed into the box as though someone on an assembly line just picked parts from a list and threw them in. Second, there are no instructions for the assembly, just a very poor line drawing exploded view of the faucet and wrong handles and the only instruction being "don't use plumbers putty and the tools needed are an adjustable wrench and (Phillips screwdriver" - which was not needed for any assembly step). They do include a hex key to lock the handles in place on the valve stems but that's it. Plenty of other plumber tools were needed to complete a proper installation. I did go to the manufacturers website looking for better instructions but all that was there was the same 1 page line drawing that came in the box. No help there...3. The faucet spout has a very small footprint and the base does not fit onto a countertop when replacing an existing faucet. Most faucets are 1" diameter shafts but this one has a 3/4" shaft leaving excessive space that must be filled by a metal plate or fender type washer. According to the exploded view of the line drawing, there is supposed to be such a plate but it was missing from both faucets. I had to find a stainless steel fender washer and a rubber gasket to match in order to properly mount the spout. The brass shaft is barely long enough to fit through a granite countertop and base in order to make the connections below.3. The valve parts were incorrectly identified for hot and cold so that made it more difficult to properly install them. They marked 3 of them "C" for cold and 1 of them "H" for hot. If you follow conventional installation, you would get them wrong and have to remove the valves and swap sides or change orientation which wastes a lot of time. In addition the valve shafts are about 1/2" shorter than most other brands which made it necessary to remove material from the underside to provide clearance so that the valve shafts would properly engage the upper components. These are also 3/4" so there is a lot of wasted space that has to be dealt with.4. There is a "swivel T fitting that fits onto the bottom of the spout connection that is poorly designed and poorly manufactured. The center of the T that connects to the faucet spout is assembled with a hex insert fitting and very small o-ring. This component is internally concave which does not provide a flat surface for the rubber washer which is a leak waiting to happen. In addition, they did not tighten the insert to insure a leakproof connection. Of course, you wouldn't know that unless you had the correct hex tool size and tightened it yourself (remember there are no instructions) and when you try to tighten the nut to correct the leak, the rubber washer bulges into the shaft and the T-fitting cannot make a proper seal. There should have been a soft beveled or cone washer with a brass backing washer to insure a proper seal. Once I supplied those items and tightened the insert, the leak was stopped at that point. Unfortunately, the other two legs of the T-fitting which attach to the valves via a stainless steel jacketed hose were poorly threaded. They should have a smooth thread but there was chatter on those threads making them very difficult to get a good seal and the tolerances were not very close . By the way, those hoses need to be about 2 to 3 inches longer to prevent kinking and make installation easier.5. The stems for the drain/pop-up stoppers had one attached to the body and the other was loose. The one that was loose was easy to apply joint compound to and assemble without any problems. The other one that was already attached was very difficult to remove in order to seal and properly assemble. When I did get it apart, I found that it had damaged threads which required chasing the threads and applying thread seal compound to get it to seal properly. This should never have gotten into the package that way. The one good thing I can say about the drains is that the gaskets they came with were good and make a good seal. I was skeptical since they said do not use plumbers putty (which is normally used for such installations) but the seal held using the included product.6. The drain pop-up stoppers are the type that you press down to close and press again to open. They do work but my objection is that when you have filled the sink with hot or dirty water, you have to put your hand back into that water to release the stopper. Kind of counter-productive.You might ask why I didn't give up and just return the whole mess. For one, the Mrs. likes the Dolphins a lot. The other was that you don't learn about some of these defects until you are well into the project. Finally, the old faucets were already removed and disposed of. I would not buy this product again on a bet. If it were possible to get some compensation for the wasted time and the additional materials required to install these faucets, I wish FaucetsUSA would contact me and offer some compensation.
