Subaru Legacy (10-16) & Forester (09-16) Haynes Repair Manual

Also applicable to most systems on the Outback
I still like a printed basic auto repair manual rather than the digital type. Such are getting harder to find, and I understand why.We happen to have an Outback in this model year range. The Outback and Legacy vehicles are so similar that our owner's manual is labeled "Outback and Legacy". I don't know why Haynes says this is for the Forester and Legacy, though I suspect the Forester is similar enough to make this useful. In any case, if you are familar with Haynes manuals then this is pretty typical of their work. My long-time favorite DIY repair manual publisher.

Not much help with bearing assembly replacement
Got this book hoping for details about real wheel bearing assembly replacement but it was not much help besides providing torque for tightening bolts. The table of contents, index, and chapter content was not thorough in my opinion. Took me a few attempts but eventually, I found a very good youtube video and used that instead.

First purchase once I get a car
Wonderful resource, should be included with your car if you do your own maintenance. Bought for my 2015 Subaru Outback and matches up well. There are some service intervals that conflict with my cars manual but a call to a dealer clears that up. Has paid for itself with the savings of doing my own maintenance work. All pics are in black and white which is unfortunate but they're still usable.

LEGACY/FORESTER Basic Shop Manual
It covers several years of the two Subaru models, and as such is a little short on details, but it is a place to start. Print and photo quality is not top notch, but OK. If you cannot find your info here, tome to do a careful search and sorting of what has been posted on YouTube, but careful whst you believe!

Its a repair manual, and nicely done.
This is certainly not my first Haynes or Chilton repair manual, so I knew what to expect. The photos and diagrams are better than older issues, and they seem to have upgraded the paper to a smoother stock which shows the photos better. I make a lot of notes in the manual, and this matte uncoated paper is good for that (you would not want a gloss). My 3-Star is for two reasons: A) This manual does not cover the H6 Subaru engine (6 cylinder). They are clear and upfront about that, but if you have that engine, it would be nice the repair manual covered it. B) Haynes does not make a Subaru Outback manual, which is odd since that is a very popular body style and car. That said, the Outback originally grew out of the Legacy line, and the Outback and Forester are very similar cars. For all common repairs a DIY is likely to do, this manual will cover that work (though your Outback might look slightly different, everything will be recognizable and in about the same location). I am on my 7th Subaru, having owned one or two every year since 1999. One reason is that while they get better each year, there is remarkable consistency from year to year and model to model. The brakes on our 1999 Subaru pretty much looked like those on the 2012. The photo is from the auto craft shop at an Army base, where people can work on their own cars. I just did an oil change on this Subaru.

Rely on Haynes
Like all Haynes manuals, well researched and pretty complete. Certainly something you want if you are doing your own work, and even helpful to educate yourself when you decide to have a shop handle a job. One minor grumble is that over the years, the quality of the paper has been reduced, I assume to lower production cost. Mostly that doesn't matter, but I find that the resolution of the photos has been affected by the cheaper paper (or some other change in the printing process). Nonetheless, I would not be without a Haynes manual for every car under my care.

Covers too wide a range of models to be useful
This manual tries to cover too wide a range of models and years of these two vehicles and doesnt do a great job at showing specifics. Its pretty vague and lacks the detailed pictures and instructions have seen in other manuals by this publisher.
