Better than advertised.
I have added this to my day-pack. I already have one for my bigger pack for deeper multi-night hikes. These are a necessity for primitive camping. This one is made well and you get some perks with it (waxed tinder cord/lighter barrel) which I don't use but good to have if your tinder is harder to start. Happy with purchase and it is a BIG ferro-rod. Sparks well. I like the steel that comes with it... All sides are sharp 90 degrees to throw the sparks. Great value.

It works as well as you could hope for
It's a ferro rod. If your looking at this, you know what it is. It works well. It sends a shower of directed sparks as you would expect. This one is a pretty good value IMO. I'm happy with the purchase. I haven't used the tinder rope because I just haven't needed it. But it's handy to know it's there if you need it. I've never blown the whistle. I don't know if it works or not, or how it sounds if it does work. The striker is a substantial metal striker. It's not some flimsy piece of tin. That's a nice touch. Being a big substantial striker, it could have some teeth to help process tinder. But if you are using a ferro rod, you probably already have another way to process tinder. The lanyard is a pretty long strand of para-cord. Although it is twisted and tied making it much shorter. I purchased this ferro rod specifically because of the para-cord lanyard. It is just convenient to have everything contained on a lanyard. I did take the whistle apart to get to the ends of the para-cord so that I could unwrap/untie it. That way I can store another ferro rod on the same lanyard, and also wear it around my neck for convenience. A ferro rod is a MUST HAVE. In a survival situation, your only other recourse is a friction fire, and that is exponentially more difficult. I find that it is easier to start a fire with a ferro rod than it is with a lighter. There are probably a few reasons for this. First, I'm sure that I prepare my tinder better to accept a spark when I'm using a ferro rod. Second, it can be difficult to direct a flame toward a fuel source, especially if it is low to the ground. A ferro rod has no problem showering sparks exactly where you want them, whether it is low to the ground or not. How many times have you burned your thumb trying to light a fire with a lighter? That's not going to happen with a ferro rod.

Great start for a fire kit.
Great spark, solid reliable system. Scraper is superior to most and the cotton match really rounds out this set making a solid fire starting and a great beginning for a fire kit.

Everything Included Fire Starter
The ferro rod we received came with a half moon chip, one on each end, not a deal breaker just not perfect. The two jute cords with flame stoppers is very convenient, so one will not have to source a match. The whistle was a great idea but ours didn't work. The steel striker is good quality and has a nice sharp spine. The cord attached to the ferro rod and whistle is nicely wrapped and it all came packaged in a reusable plastic case that is easily stored. This item would get Five-Stars if it had not come with defects noted.

A Fire Starting Rod That Ignites Adventure
Hey there, fellow adventurers! I recently got my hands on a fire starting rod, and let me tell you, it has completely transformed my outdoor experiences. Using the fire starting rod is a breeze. Just scrape the built-in striker against the rod, and sparks will fly! It's like magic. The sparks are hot and reliable, quickly catching onto any dry tinder or kindling. I've never had such an efficient fire-starting tool in my camping arsenal before. One of the standout features of this rod is its longevity. Unlike matches or lighters that can run out or get damaged, this fire starting rod keeps going and going. It's a reliable source of ignition that won't let you down, no matter how many fires you need to start on your adventure. Let's talk about size. This fire starting rod is compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry in your backpack or pocket. It doesn't take up much space and won't weigh you down. It's always within reach whenever you need it, without being a burden during your outdoor explorations. Now, I have to address the elephant in the room: the lack of instructions. While this fire starting rod is straightforward to use, it would be beneficial to have some basic instructions included. It's not a deal-breaker, but it would make it more accessible to beginners who are new to fire starting techniques. In a nutshell, this fire starting rod has become an essential part of my outdoor gear collection. Its durability, ease of use, reliable sparks, and long-lasting performance make it a standout choice. Whether you're a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or a novice adventurer, this rod will have your back when it comes to starting a fire in the great outdoors. Flame On
This thing is a fantastic kit to keep around! The ferro rod will last forever and is easy to handle during to its beefy nature. The striker had good edges and helps produce plenty of sparks. The wicks, when prepped properly light easy with the ferro rod. They emitt a nice flame for starting your tender. The kit comes in a nice little plastic storage container with easy to follow instructions. I would definitely buy again for myself or as a gift!

Works well
Very nice size. I have big hands and the ferro rod and striker are big enough to be comfortable. You have to scrape off the black paint to get sparks but after you do it throws plenty of sparks. The tinder rope works good . The cover on the rope is metal of some sort.
