Poor Organization
I was into gun hobbies 50 years ago or so. Then I got away from it because I didn't have any good places to shoot. I enjoyed precision target shooting, became familiar with several types of guns from shotguns to antique western revolvers and several types of semi-automatic pistols. But now that I am aware of becoming a prime target for a home invasion, I sold off my "fun gun s" and have put together a small number of handguns for training, for home defense an d for self defense away from the home. I obtained a Concealed Carry permit which actually was needed in my present home state just to take my guns to and from the shooting range until they recently changed the law. So I recently decided I had a great carry gun for self defense (after considerable training and practice) and I had a very powerful semi-automatic for home defense. But I decided I needed a less powerful but more effective gun for home defense. I do not want to injure any neighbors by shooting a bullet that will travel for many blocks through houses. I decided the time had come to get a .45 ACP. Doing much reading on the subject, it looked like the 1911 pistol was the best. 1911 was the year it was first introduced to use by the US Army. Current models are very similar to the original design but there have been some improvements in the past 100 years. I bought this book for an idea of the significance of certain aspects of the evolution of the gun.Even though it is the Kindle version, this book is very good at showing the evolution of the design. But I was dissapointed in the poor organization. The book seems to be made up of several magazine articles stuck together. Still it was adequate for me to determine I needed to buy one of these guns. This gun is more complex in the mechanical sense than any gun I have had yet. I still rely on the photos in the owner's handbook that came with the gun for normal maintainance. This book gives a good overview. I am still looking for a more complete book set up for general reference on the 1911 semi-automatic.

Well worth the time and money
I'm kinda new to the 1911 having received a GSG 1911 in .22LR for my 52nd birthday last fall. (The GSG is a great gun to try to see if the 1911 frame is for you, cheap to buy and cheap to feed. Two inch groups with a scope and careful ammo selection at 25 yards too.) It was interesting to learn about the competition aspects as well as a review on many of the outstanding models available. I first read the handgun articles in Gun Digest when I get a new addition. This is like a full year of the best parts in one shot!

Well worth it
I was quite happy with this book, it is a good collection of a lot of 1911 information. It does have a 'jack of all trades' feeling to it but for someone new to the 1911 it has a lot of good information. I think most of the people unhappy with it are expecting it to be more than what it is. You won't find one book on the 1911 that has everything in it. It is impossible for one book to collect every fact, variant, the history and all modifications for a pistol that is a hundred years old. But this book does give a good overview of a lot of information pertaining to the 1911 and variant there off. It does not go too in depth on any one subject but is worth a read if this is what you are looking for.

The Gun Digest Book of the 1911: A Complete Look at the Use, Care & Repair of the 1911 Pistol, Vol. 2
I have not finished reading Vol.1 from 2001 yet (also recently purchased), but purchased Vol. 2 to get more recent reviews and test results for 1911 pistols. Jumping back and forth between both volumns, with questions in mind, it is almost like the author was reading my mind and knew exactly what I would want to know on this subject. It isn't just dry reading either; the author provides little known facts and occasional humor. You're going to like this guy.If you own a 1911 and want a good understanding of its history and function or are considering which to buy, this book should be on the top of your list.

Lots of info, history of manufacturers
Like his other volume on the 1911 Sweeny does a marvelous job providing lots of stuff about this gun. And like the other one it's full of typos. Get ready for an onslaught of 'form' instead of 'from'. I can't believe Sweeny missed this so somebody else did. Are proof readers extinct ? The content is well worth it. The lack of polish isn't.

Model 1911 fan's bible
If you own, or have a fancy for the Model 1911 semi-auto, including the ones currently being manufactured, this is a good book for you. I own a Dan Wesson (CZ) Pointman Seven Model 1911 style .45. I have loved this big gun ever since I carried one in the MPs circa 1960.This book has a lot of good info on the feeding and care of this often admired, if not loved handgun. I consider it an integral part of my firearm reference library.

Okay, but Could Have Been Better
Mr. Sweeney rewards the patient reader with some good information about the 1911. However, he should have spent more time organizing his topic, hired a proof reader, and used a better spell checker. For example, the word "form" is consistently used instead of "from." Many other typos and grammar errors abound. This is a 336 page book with no index and the table of contents doesn't list the titles of the chapters. Some photos are used three or four times in different chapters to fill space, and some of the captions have no relationship to the photos. The book could use more pertinent photos and illustrations. For example, the author goes into detailed description of 1911 barrel anatomy but fails to provide a labeled illustration, leaving the non-expert reader confused and unable to follow.Could have been a much better book.

Lots of useful information, some discrepancy between strong
Lots of useful information, some discrepancy between strong, personal opinions and recommendations in the first part and very warm reviews in the second part, occasionally at the edge of contradiction with the part one. Of course no real fan of 1911 can afford not to read (and have) this fundaental book.

Great Read
Bought for my husband as well as 1911 The First Hundred Years. How good is this book? He read it cover to cover in two days and constantly pulls it out for reference. If you're into 1911 pistols you'll love it!
