Great product and great value. A little goes a long way. Handle carefully it’s quite aromatic but not in a bad way.

My wife has health issues that require her to use a low FODMAP diet. Many of our favorite recipes used onion and garlic which she needs to avoid. The asafoetida powder provides onion and garlic like flavor!

I suffer from SIBO and GERD..Onions and garlic although I love them, are no Bueno for my digestion. I found a suggestion for this spice in a SIBO forum. So good- gives you the sensation of lots of onion and garlic without the indigestion!!! A must have in my spice cabinet- new fave!!

Product was sent along with another item from Amazon. When I opened the plastic bag containing both, I was horrified to see that this light, possibly easily destructible foodstuff packet was lying right underneath a rather weighty case of catfood. Fortunately, it was still intact. From there, I got a good opportunity to look more closely at the asafoetida itself (without actually breaking its seal). Since one side of the plastic packet was transparent, I could see that the product was a very fine white powder, resembling bleached white flour used in baking. The reverse side of the packet showed a picture of asafoetida that was more granular in nature and definitely less fine. It was darker in color, closer to what one might expect of a rhizome that's in the brownish-amber hue range. Because I'm quite familiar with asafoetida and have often used it in the past, I was completely perplexed and really disappointed with what I had ordered. Despite its being marketed as ORGANIC, I felt very uncertain about its purity and, even, authenticity. When I finally got the courage and nerve to fully open the packet to do a smell test, I admit to being somewhat less surprised. It had the familiar, strong scent characteristic of asafoetida. But because I already had trust issues with the product, I did not linger over scent-testing or get too close to the very fine white powder. I felt safer keeping a distance from a food item that clearly differed from its marketed visual representation and, most importantly, from my own past experiences with asafoetida. Because it was not returnable, I decided to just discard the product.

Boy does this spice stink before it’s cooked! But a pinch to 1/4 tsp. in a dish that’s cooked, really is delicious, with an almost leek-like flavor. I love that this brand has no additives to it, (so many brands mix with wheat or other fillers) & you get your money’s worth, without having to worry about allergens for those you cook for! I’ve been adding to my daals, curries & this green bean side dish: In a pan heat the following spices in cooking oil or ghee, until the mustard seeds start to crackle and pop (use what spices you have of these on hand...should still be good if you don’t have all of them): -a tsp or so of mustard seeds -a tsp or so of cumin powder or cumin seeds -few pinches of ginger powder -an Indian bay leaf* - a tsp or so of ground coriander seed - tsp of ground turmeric - 1/4 tsp. of hing/asafoetida - ground black pepper & salt to taste - fresh pressed garlic is also delicious in this Add a bag of frozen green beans, and cook till flavors have melded & green beans are soft. This is a great, easy side dish! Have fun! Indian bay leaf: * https://smile.amazon.com/Rani-Selected-Natural-Ingredients-Indian/dp/B006POKE88/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
