ICY BOXIB-RD3620SU3 External 2 Bay RAID System for 3.5 inch SATA I/II/III HDD

Originally I was due to send this box back because it came with an EU power supply, however after speaking to Amazon they are (1) checking the inventory to verify what is going on as this should not have happened. While they do this the item has been removed from sale (sold by amazon items), so you should not have this problem if you get to buy from amazon in the future. (2) they arranged a replacement power supply delivered next day so I could keep the box. Always great to deal with Amazon.As for the box I am absolutely delighted with it. It is straightforward device which works very well. Sustained transfer rates over USB3.0 of 117Mb copying from internal HDD, perfectly good speeds in RAID 1 mirroring configuration. Setup was very easy I inserted 2 used 2tb drives and configured it for RAID 1 storage, then used Windows to prepare the drive - job done.The unit itself has a fan but it is very quiet and can't hear it over my PC which is not particularly loud either. The front door of the unit is the only part which feels like it might be a bit flimsy but I am not concerned. This is a great product at a good price.

I was salvaging a couple of 1Tb drives from a newly-defunct desktop and my son (who did the actual dismantling) suggested one of these as a quick fix. I have no PC expertise worth mentioning so I was expecting to have to get him back over to do the installation. Not a bit of it!Remarkably simple job to install the brackets (30 seconds with a screwdriver) and then to insert the completed units into the box. When plugging in and switching on I simply followed the instructions and accepted all defaults.The whole device worked perfectly first time, and has continued to work without problem since. In operation it is completely quiet and unobtrusive.The only thing which was not a success was the included screwdriver which was clearly a manufacturing failure - it was simply a smooth 'spike' at the end and so unable to engage with the slots in the screws,

This seemed like just what I was looking for to utilise the many spare hard drives I have knocking around. Unfortunately, the one I received refused to configure to any of the RAID settings. After selecting the mode I required, pressing the 'confirmation' button at the back every which way just didn't have any effect at all, reverting the unit back to 'Single' mode, which somewhat defeats the object of a RAID system. Mind you, the item I received came in a box with a broken seal, suggesting prior use/return. Don't you just hate it when this happens? Needless to say, it has gone straight back to Amazon, who, with their peerless returns policy, is the only positive aspect of this matter. I opted for a refund rather than a replacement as I have somewhat lost confidence in this product and manufacturer.

When this device arrived yesterday, I opened the door on the front, noted the couple of projections on the back of the door which were presumably to hold the drives in place, popped in my pair of WD Red 1Tb drives, and then wondered why they slipped forward when I picked up the box to plug in the cables. It says "the installation is completely tool-less" on the Product Description, but this is untrue; hidden amongst the collection of plastic-wrapped cables in the box was a pair of plastic handles, four screws and a screwdriver. A couple of minutes later, having fixed the handles to the HDDs, I popped them back in and closed the door without problem. I plugged in the power and data cables and pulled the cover off the recessed switch bay at the back of the device.Power on, I fiddled with the Fan button, which allows Auto, 1, 2, or 3 settings; going back to the Auto setting left the Auto and Fan 1 LEDs showing (and presumably the Fan 2 or Fan 3 lights go on if the fan turns itself up). I fiddled with the Mode button to set it to RAID 1 (the alternatives being Single [presumably concatenation] JBOD or Raid 0) and then pressed the recessed RAID confirmation switch for the three seconds until the device turned itself off. Given the consequences of an accidental change of Mode (your data's all gone) this is a necessary safety precaution. Also in the switch bay is the power syncronisation switch, which arrived set to 'ON' and is designed to turn off the device 15 seconds after the PC shuts down; I left this alone and replaced the fiddly cover to the switch bay.Switching the device on, I launched Disk Management (via Start, right click on Computer, Manage), identified the device with a drive letter and named it 'Back Up'. I then ran Windows Backup.I bought this gadget as backup device and have connected it to the computer via a USB link. The gadget comes with mulitple power cables and transformer, a USB cable and an eSATA cable. Strangely, the eSATA interface is limited to 3 Gb/s (I'd have expected 6) although the USB3 connection offers 5 Gb/s. I've never seen an eSATA connection on a PC, so presumably you'd need to fit an expansion card, and if you need an expansion card why not buy a USB 3? A network connection would have been of more use.The LEDs on the enclosure are small, about 1mm, and not easy to see. The red RAID and blue HDD lights aren't too bad, but the green power and fan lights are invisible unless you're right in front of them. My only serious dislike of this gadget is the sprung door latch on the front right-hand side which would be easy to open if you're careless with the enclosure when it's in use. Oh, and there's no temperature sensor.Overall, good kit so far.

Lo dicho, espectacular. El tamaño de la caja es realmente pequeño. Construcción metálica, para disipar bien el calor.Su uso es sencillo y la configuración de los discos es sencilla. Se puede utilizar como 2 discos independientes (se asigna 2 unidades), o como RAID 0, 1 o JBOD. Ojo al cambiar la configuración, los discos se reinician y se pierde la información.Con USB 3.0, la velocidad de transferencia supera los 200MB / segundo.Resumen, caja económica con grandes prestaciones.El servicio de Amazon, como siempre, muy bueno.

Il Box è prima di tutto mediamente silenzioso, ma non lo consiglio in camera da letto in quanto il ronzio c'è e può disturbare durante la notte. Per quanto riguarda la temperatura, non sembra assolutamente scaldare più di tanto. Durante vari test, la ventola è sempre rimasta alla velocità più bassa e il box è sempre molto freddo al tatto.La cavetteria è di buona fattura, c'è tutto quello che serve (persino un cacciavite per montare i supporti per l'estrazione dei dischi). Buona anche la la qualità costruttiva del box (è in alluminio), che è sorretto da dei piedini antiscivolo (ottimi per le scrivanie, ma anche per tavoli in legno).A differenza delle altre recensioni che ho visto, sul Mac con Sierra dopo un tot di periodo di inattività, il box si spegne automaticamente e si riaccende non appena tento di accedere ad uno dei file.L'installazione è molto veloce, servono circa 5 minuti:- Basta avvitare i supporti;- Inserire i dischi all'interno e chiudere lo sportello;- Collegare all'USB e presa di corrente;- Selezionare direttamente dal Box la modalità RAID e confermare tenendo premuto il bottoncino nella parte posteriore accanto all'ingresso del plug 12v;- Formattare l'unità disco dal computerSul Mac viene subito riconosciuto come disco Time Machine, ma è possibile utilizzarlo anche come un classico volume. Ho notato che di default il volume non dà i permessi di scrittura all'utente. È necessario cliccare con il tasto destro > Ottieni informazioni > Condivisione e permessi e dare i privilegi di lettura e scrittura agli utenti desiderati.Lo utilizzo con due WD WD10EZEX in Raid 0. Non va velocissimo, ma neanche piano (in allegato i risultati dei test con "BlackMagic". Lo consiglierei a tutti quelli che hanno bisogno di un box RAID non troppo rumoroso, ben ventilato e di ottima fattura (e sopratutto economico).

Nachdem mein altes RAID-Gehäuse von Fantec nach ca. 5 Jahren den Geist aufgegeben hat (es war noch USB 2.0) habe ich mich nach einem zeitgemäßeren Ersatz umgesehen. USB 3.0 sollte es auf jeden Fall sein. Das Gehäuse von Icy Box sprach mich zuerst einmal vor allem optisch an. Die Rezensionen waren auch sehr gut, also mal bestellt - gleich mit neuen 1 TB Festplatten. Mittlerweile besitze ich sogar 2 davon - eines läuft permanent im RAID 1 Modus, das andere als Backup-Lösung nur wenn es gebraucht wird im SINGLE-Modus.Das Gehäuse machte auch in der Realität einen sehr schicken und wertigen Eindruck. Beim Einbau der Festplatten kann man allerdings Probleme bekommen. Meine beiden alten Samsung Spinpoint F3 Festplatten, die bisher im alten RAID-Gehäuse ihren Dienst taten, sind so dick, dass man die mitglieferten Plastikhebel des Icy Box-Gehäuses nicht montieren kann - sie passen schlichtweg nicht auf die großen Platten. Man muss ältere Festplatten also ohne Hebel einbauen, was das Entfernen ein wenig erschwert, aber normalerweise nimmt man die Platten ja auch nicht ständig aus dem Gehäuse.Bei meinen beiden neuen Festplatten (Seagate ST1000DM003) ist eher das Gegenteil der Fall. Diese Platten sind so dünn, dass sie im Gehäuse sozusagen lose umherschlackern. Die Platten werden in diesem Gehäuse vertikal betrieben. Wären sie horizontal, würde die Erdanziehung dafür sorgen, dass sie plan auf den Führungen aufliegen. Im vertikalen Betrieb haben sie jedoch enormes Spiel zur Seite hin. Bei geschlossenem Deckel drückt zwar Schaumstoff auf die Platten, so dass sie nicht ganz so leicht herumrutschen, zu ruckartig würde ich das Gehäuse mit eingebauten Platten jedoch lieber nicht bewegen. Am besten wäre es wohl, den freien Raum in den Slots mit Schaumstoff oder Ähnlichem auszustopfen.Ich betreibe die Gehäuse an USB 3.0 an einem aktiven USB 3.0 Hub und konnte bisher keinen einzigen Verbindungsabbruch feststellen. Die Verbindung ist also sehr stabil - nicht selbstverständlich bei USB 3.0. Nach dem Einbau haben komischerweise beide Gehäuse erstmal eine der beiden Platten als fehlerhaft angezeigt (rotes X leuchtet). Nach dem Aus- und erneuten Einschalten verschwand das allerdings, und kam auch nicht wieder. Ich erwähne es, weil es wie gesagt bei beiden von mir verwendeten Gehäusen der Fall war. Übervorsichtige User könnten davon verunsichert werden.Was ich sehr angenehm finde, sind die dezenten LED's. Mein altes Gehäuse von Fanctec hatte dermaßen helle blauen LED's, dass sie im Dunkeln den gesamten Raum ausgeleuchtet haben. Die LED's des Icy Box Gehäuses sind sehr klein, und leuchten nur schwach, so dass sie überhaupt nicht störend wirken.Der Lüfter ist ziemlich leise. Moderne Festplatten werden sowieso kaum noch warm, so dass bei den beiden Seagate-Platten im RAID 1 der Lüfter immer nur auf Stufe 1 von 3 läuft. Werfe ich allerdings das Backup-Gehäuse mit den beiden alten Samsung-Platten an, schaltet der Lüfter schon nach kurzer Zeit auf Stufe 2, da diese Platten ziemlich warm werden. Stufe 3 erreiche ich jedoch auch damit nicht.Die Datenübertragungsraten entsprechen den USB 3.0-Durchschnittswerten, und sind für mich absolut zufriedenstellend.Das Gehäuse bietet die Möglichkeit, automatisch in den Standby-Modus zu gehen, wenn der Rechner abgeschaltet wird. Das mag funktionieren, wenn man das Gehäuse direkt an einem USB-Anschluss des Rechners betreibt, und dieser nicht über eine Master/Slave-Steckdose betrieben wird. Die Platte erkennt nämlich an der USB-Spannung, ob der Rechner aus ist. Mein Notebook hängt an einer Master/Slave-Steckdose, und die sendet alle paar Sekunden einen kurzen Impuls - scheint ein übliches Verhalten bei vielen dieser Steckdosen zu sein, war bei meiner alten auch so. Dieser Impuls veranlasst das Icy Box Gehäuse jedoch, aus dem Standby zu erwachen, nur um kurz darauf wieder auf Standby zu gehen. Und so geht das alle paar Sekunden. Dass das für die Festplatten äußerst schädlich ist, dürfte klar sein. Ich habe die Automatik daher abgeschaltet, und schalte das Gehäuse kurz nach dem Rechner manuell ein. Ausgeschaltet wird es über die Master/Slave-Steckdose, die ihm einfach den Strom nimmt, sobald das Notebook aus ist.Alles in allem bin ich mit den Gehäusen bisher äußerst zufrieden, und wer mit den genannten kleinen Nachteilen leben kann, dem kann ich das Ganze vorbehaltlos empfehlen. Das Gehäuse sieht edel aus, ist wertig verarbeitet, kommt mit einem guten Netzteil, und funktioniert ohne jegliche Ausfälle oder Verbindungsabbrüche mit USB 3.0.
