Worth the wait!
Making a scrap quilt is easy. Making a great scrap quilt is a bit harder because it’s not just a collection of any old scrap you’ve got in your stash. It’s about mixing color and pattern, and knowing how to tie it all together to make something really special - to make a quilt that you don’t know why you love it, you just do. That’s the kind of quilt that Lissa Alexander makes.Lissa Alexander has been making quilts for more than thirty years. Starting with a quilt she made with her sister to working in a quilt shop, Lissa has always had a gift for color, and a talent for mixing different styles of prints. As the Director of Marketing for Moda Fabrics, Lissa has spearheaded a number of compilation books for Moda's fabric designers, and more importantly, she has created some of the recognizable and "most pinned" quilts in the online quilting universe. With Oh Scrap!, Lissa is sharing what she knows in her first "just Lissa" book.Oh Scrap! has a dozen terrific quilts ranging from confident-beginner level to intermediate. So? Lots of books have that. What sets this book apart is how Lissa explains what she did and why - mixing prints, color and adding that “something extra”. She shows how one quilt made primarily with 2.5” squares is unified by a single background and a common color element in each very different, very colorful block, while another made with multiple backgrounds works because the value of the fabrics used is what matters. The inclusion of swatch-cards showing many of the actual fabrics used in the quilt takes the guesswork out of what some of the terms mean. The swatches also make it clear that this isn’t about matching colors or fabrics - it’s about zingers and sparklers! There are a few fabrics and combinations that will have you wondering what she was thinking… right up until you see the finished quilt. As for the quilts, there are projects made with squares and strips - there is Splendid Scraps, Tone It Down and Stair Steps. If you love triangles as much as I do, Awesome Land, Indian Blanket and Firecrackers should keep you busy. (I’m already pulling fabrics for Firecrackers.) While I am pretty sure I won’t make it in pink, Sherbet Stars is high on my to-make list. I love how Lissa shows that simply changing the value-placement in the blocks makes it look like there are nine different blocks. In addition to the tips on using scraps, there are some great tips on piecing, pressing and storing fabrics. And most important, Lissa shares that you don’t have to have a warehouse-size stash to make a scrap quilt that you and your family will treasure.

Awesome book
I love this book. I am not a scrap quilter, but I want to start managing and using my stash. This book has inspired me to do that. It teaches you to make "scrap" quilts that look organized and coordinated while just using fabrics you already own. I keep going back to it for tips and inspiration, and I have already coordinated my blues and greens and started on the courthouse steps quilt. This book has truly put me on a new path in quilting!

Got Scraps? Must have.
Thank goodness for this book. The fabric scraps get so overwhelming so fast and this book really allows you to do some great things with them. Do read the introduction, as I found it very helpful in managing my scrap stash and how to organize it. It also gives a basic understanding of the elements of design, which (as a non artist) I had never had.

My favorite is the Granny Square
I loved many of the quilts and the variety of colors and prints used in each quilt. She gives snippets of advice re: color and print choices. For my favorite quilts I would be better off trying to choose the color way she used.

Nice addition to quilt book collection.
Haven't gotten the chance to make any of the quilts yet, but several are on my list. Purchased the ebook on sale. Will likely buy the printed version eventually. Beautiful photos, relatively clear instructions.

Love this book!
This is one of the best quilting books I have purchased. Lissa Alexander has a casual, easy to follow style that I have enjoyed in her other books where she compiled the patterns and contributed. She gives a glimpse into how she decides on colour palettes, explains some of the terms involved. Her patterns are really lovely and this is probably the first time that I would make every one in the book. I highly recommend it to anyone that quilts. Great buy.

Lissa gives the Why, the How to, and the What's next for each of these beautiful quilts.I can't wait to get started - though I'm also quite content to just sit back and look at the lovely photos and clear drawings.
