One of my favorite BBC programs
I loved watching As Time Goes By on my PBS station. My father-in-law had ordered the whole DVD set years ago. I would borrow them to watch and when he passes a few years ago, left the set to me. I had only seen the reunion special once and I bought it to complete my DVD collection. I love it!

The Reunion Specials Are a continuation of this excellent TV series.
I have been watching the TV series on PBS for several reiterations. My wife and I truly enjoyed watching Lionel and Jean get to rekindle their romance after a 38 year hiatus. I find their episodes to consist full of clean adult humor, and the writing to be realistically yet humorously focused their extended family situations. Due to other commitments, I watched only a few of the 11th season, and did not even know that there were any reunions afterwards. To find the Reunion Specials available on Amazon was a very pleasant surprise. It was wonderful to see that both Judy and Sandy did get married. (Those were the episodes that I had missed.) It was great fun to watch the Reunion Specials as they continued the story line with Jean wanting to become a grandmother.while Lionel was being his usual curmudgeon self. I enjoyed these reunion episodes very much. My wife and I are senior citizens, and we could easily identify with many of the characters' situations.Correction: I have the Complete Original Series as well, which contains 11 discs. That number caused me to be mistaken about the 11th season, as there were only 9 seasons. But it was great fun to watch the Reunion Specials, even though they were made three years after the original series had ended. The specials pick up where the original series left off, as if there was no time gap. We really enjoyed watching this continuation of the characters from the original series. as they have almost become like our own extended family.

Flawed but Fun
I received my copy of the "As Time Goes By - Reunion Special" this week and watched it last night. My title pretty much says it all - flawed but fun (in spots). In trying to put my finger on the major problems that I encountered in watching the program, I came to the conclusion that it lacked much of the charm of the original series. As others wrote, this DVD is not a good introduction to the series, and is primarily aimed at fans who are already committed to the characters.Jean, as played by Judy Dench since the inception of the series several years ago, has always had her annoying moments. Her logic is frequently flawed and she never learns to keep her nose out of other people's business. But those who are long-time viewers are used to her quirks, although her purchase of the two baby cribs in advance of anyone being pregnant, is even a little over the top for her. She flies around the set like a demented butterfly, for no purpose other than to be ditzy. For years we have heard Lionel tell Jean how beautiful he found her when they met, and still finds her, yet from her reaction one would have thought she had just heard it for the first time.Lionel and Sandy continue to be the most down-to-earth of the regulars, and as usual didn't disappoint this viewer. I have never liked the character of Penny, Jean's sister-in-law, but for once she seemed almost like a tonic played against Jean's extreme silliness. Penny's husband, Steven, IMO deserves a new wife: younger, sexier, and more tolerant. If there is another special in the offing, which seems likely from the last few minutes of this program, I hope they ditch Penny, along with Rocky, Lionel's ancient father. And that brings me to the biggest problem with the special, at least in my opinion: only a couple of years are supposed to have passed since the end of the regular series and the reunion stories, but the actors have aged in the normal manner, since in real time it has been several years since the final season. Phillip Bretherton, who plays Alistair, now has very grey, almost white, hair, which is quite attractive, but makes the passage of real time more obvious. Lionel, and the actor who plays his father, now look the same age, which is jarring. Not to be morbid about it, but we die-hard fans know that this lightweight special is something precious, for as the principal actors age a reunion special ten years hence may not be in the cards. If another one is waiting in the wings, bring it on!

A fun romp after all these years
It was fun to watch another installment of our favorite show, and great to see the cast reunited. (The new 'Harry' fits well.) The actors still share wonderful chemistry and deliver lines with their usual perfect timing and witty expressions. In testament to their acting chops, they do so despite weak writing and clumsy plot construction. Though a kindly twist, the introduction of 'Patrick' was unnecessary and took away from developing fleshier storylines for our dear, regular characters. Also, the ending felt very contrived and disconnected from everything leading up to it. In fact, not noticing that my husband had switched discs between our viewings, I thought we had watched Parts 1 & 2 of a Reunion Special 1, and expected full resolution in Reunion Special 2. I was dismayed to learn that Parts 1 & 2 were in fact Reunion Specials 1 & 2, respectively. As a result, I feel the specials lack closure, which the series has previously provided in Series 9 and in the Compilation Special. If I could, I would give the Reunion Specials 3.5 stars. As is, I choose 4 because it was still a fun glimpse into the lives of fond characters as performed by wonderful actors. Geoffrey Palmer and Judy Dench, as Lionel and Jean, are a match made in thespian heaven. Philip Bretherton as Alistair and the rest of the cast in their own lovable reprisals continue to delight.Custard tart, anyone?

Classic Sit Com
This DVD contains 2 re-union episodes. #2 follows on from #1. I bought it for my father & I we have series 1 - 4 and really enjoyed them. We also watched it on TV but seemed to miss the re unions. I felt #2 was better than #1 but both were funny. By the time we pick up with the family, both the girls are now married, Alistair is his usual self. however they did not seem to have the sparkle as the others did.It is a change to watch a comedy, WITHOUT bad language in it. As they say the old ones are the best. I have yet to watch the extras on this DVD when I do I will update my review.I have also got to get the 5 - 9 series box set.

Totally Superb
Combination of Dench & Palmer, with a wonderful supporting cast, and add in superb script from Bob Larbey, where could anyone go wrong .It is British comedy at its highest level. The cast could not be improved, and their enjoyment in one another's company and performance, is the epitome of what British artists strive to maintain.

This is not a laugh out loud slapstick sitcom, rather a gentle comedy that makes you smile whilst leaving you wanting to watch more. The characters are all likeable and you find yourself warming to each and very one of them. Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer are both excellent and clearly not only genuinely liked each other but also had great on screen chemistry. The humour is dry and clever - in some episodes nothing much actually happens, but that never really detracts from the quality of the 30 minutes you've just watched. 5***** love it!
