Walking on the Wind: Cherokee Teachings for Harmony and Balance

I am happy to have gleaned some history about the Cherokee
I don't know why this author has not written anything since this book, but I read it in one day. As a clinical social worker, being culturally competent with as many diverse populations as possible is a strength. I am happy to have gleaned some history about the Cherokee, along with personal anecdotal accounts of Dr. Garrett's life. I found his writing to be thought provoking, charming, insightful, inspiring, and unique. I highly recommend this book for the exercises in some chapters that will challenge you to think outside of the box, and the perspective in which it was written. Easy read that communicates an intrinsic value in all things, especially in family and this gift we call our life.

Great book!
In my experience, navigating the "Native American Spirituality" subject heading can be tricky. There are so many authors out there who pretend to have Native American background but are really just New Age-y type folks who offer their spin on what they think Native Indian spirituality is- a point of view often frought with talk of crystals and animal totems and peyote.Given the author's somewhat scant Cherokee ancestry I was initialy skeptical- and boy, was I ever wrong. I really, really enjoyed this book. No crystals or animals totems or peyote here. Just straight spiritual teachings from the Cherokee that anyone can apply to their life right now. The book's aim is to help people gain spiritual balance- with other people, the Earth and themselves. I also really like that Mr. Garrett states a number of times that there are many paths out there that lead you to the same end, the Cherokee way is just one of them.Overall I found the book very helpful and applicable to modern life- a great addition to my bookshelf!

Finally, good books
Great book, true to actual native traditions. However, these books are a little to pacifist, I believe in peace and harmony but there is also war which is the balance of that harmony.Still will buy the rest of the author's titles

Native American History
Earth Mother Crying: Encyclopedia of Prophecies of Peoples of the Western Hemisphere, The Cherokee Nation in the Civil War, The Cherokee Nation: A History, Walking on the Wind: Cherokee Teachings for Harmony and Balance and Trail of Tears: The Rise and Fall of the Cherokee Nation were originally purchased as a gift for a friend who is Cherokee/Choctaw. After the books arrived and I perused the book jackets I decided to buy additional copies for myself. I have not read these books yet but I'm sure I will be very happy with them based on other reviews. I think it's very important to know where we all came from and how this country came to where it is today. And, while the wrongdoings of the past cannot be undone I believe it's important to understand them and how such things happened, to understand the contributions of Native Americans to our culture and how they served this nation that did not always serve them.

One of the most important books I've ever read
Easy to read, enlightening, it literally changed the way I look at life. I couldn't put it down then went back and re-read the sections that were particularly meaningful to me. It has become my handbook for daily living. This book should be required reading for those of us caught up in a fast paced world struggling to find our way. It's so simple.

Validating, stunning, and comforting
Absolute gem. There were lessons passed to me from my mother, though we never heard other souls say the same thing until now, here. It hits home in all the right ways and the imagery is breath-taking. Very well done.

Amazing Read
Amazing read, I was able to put some of this into use in my own life in a Very trying circumstance. I doubt if I would have handled the situation as well without having read Walking on the Wind. This wisdom certainly helped me, although I am always learning and have a long ways to go. Thanks

Beautifully written book
This book is beautifully written. I have for as long as I can remember been interested in the ways of the native Indians especially their wisdom and spiritual side. My great grandmother's spirit guide was an Indian Chief. I have learnt so much from this book and would definitely recommend it.
