This Japanese Sen was minted between 1873 and 1892. The front features a dragon, a legendary creature in Japanese mythology and folklore, in the center. Outside of a beaded border are the state title and date, written from right to left as: 本日大 (Great Japan), the date of minting is represented as 年 followed by the number of years the emperor had been in power as of that year, and ending with 治 (Meiji empire). The back features the value of the coin below the Imperial Seal of Japan, the chrysanthemum.
