Perfectas

Unsure How I Like These
To preface this, I primarily use watercolors (and in the past used acrylic and oils). This is the first time really using gouache in this rainbow of colors.First off, the packaging: each little plastic tub is sealed up like a pudding cup. Some came off easily where as some, I eventually gave up trying to pry the foil back. Also, the tubs rest really close to each other in the case, their edges overlapping the lip of its neighbor. This made pulling out individual colors pretty impossible, and I needed to pull out whole rows of tubs to get to one. I know the idea is to open all of them at once then put them back in, but I wanted to start off with just the colors I was planning on using. As for the paint itself, I'm pretty torn on whether I like it. The color selection is wide, but I found it was still missing several colors/hues that I wanted to use, and the colors I did try to mix, didn't mix well. Again, since I have rarely used gouache, I don't know how much is because these are student grade paints or how much is just the learning curve with switching to a new media. Most of the colors are well pigmented, and with the addition of the tiniest bit of water, they glide well over the paper (I used watercolor paper). My first painting attempt, I won't show because it's not great, but I'm hoping with practice, it'll get better. As of now, I am finding these better suited for basic illustrations than layering - a few colors weren't as opaque as I expected them to be and therefore didn't layer well.I know these have a bit of a cult following, but I'm still on the fence. Regardless, you do get a ton of paint for the price, and if you have use for neons and metallics, it's worth it just for playing around with.

Newly designed, same excellent quality, lots of paint for the $
Himi brand jelly gouache was the first jelly gouache I had ever purchased, and ever tried, and it still remains the best or one of my favorite top two brands of jelly gouache. Since that first set that I bought from them several years ago, I’ve seen them continuously tinkering around with their product development, trying to make their products even better. One of the ways that they have thought of to make a more accessible product is to streamline the design of their packaging so that they can offer the same number of choices but in a smaller, less intimidating and more practical package. Because as attractive and voluptuous as it was to feast our eyes on their gorgeous huge trays of ~56 different colored paints in the recent past, there was the rude awakening of practicality once I owned it. Specifically, “This thing is huge! Where am I going to store it, much less lay it out to even use it?” Not everyone has a huge art studio, complete with ample table space on which to perch a very large tray of assorted paints. End result for me: I never used mine more than once or twice. But now, Himi has streamlined everything into a smaller package! This new set measures approximately 11” x 14”, making it the size of half of a full sheet of fine watercolor paper, or a small portfolio case or smaller briefcase. No longer the huge, cumbersome “Spanish armada ship” of the art supply world; I can actually make room on a side table for this set to be used without having to get up and walk halfway around my dining room table to hunt and peck at various colors for my palette. Moreover, this new and improved Himi gouache set has metallic and other novelty colors! These are things that I would have never thought to purchase in the past,…that is, until I tried Art Whale’s 24 color glitter paint set, which I absolutely love. That served to open my mind up to the possibility that there **are** lovely quality metallic, glittery paints out there that look magical and fairy like, and not at all cheesy. Another nice one in watercolors is the Sakura Koi pan set that includes one TUBE of white sparkly gouache. I mention this because I know that Himi is going to present the best foot forward now that they put out their own rocking’ glitter gouache of several colors. A quick peek shows me that, at least in their plastic jelly containers, the colors look beautiful. They also include neon colors and so forth. For me personally, I enjoy using neon and fluorescents best when I mix them with regular colored paints, to give regular colors a bit more pizazz in key, punctuated areas, but the fun thing about art is that we all get to choose our own “language” and paths with lovely supplies that facilitate us in our journey. And it is here that Himi paints excel, in that they don’t irk or annoy me with paint selections that are streaky of chalky. Himi gouache is always vivid, deeply saturated, go on evenly and boldly.Since Himi is a brand that has shown that they do innovate their products, I would like to ask them if they would consider their next innovation to include individual, reusable lids for their gouache? Other than that one thing, I think that this is a lovely paint set and very giftable for artists and the young at heart of all ages. At present, this set goes for just under $50, which means you get a lot of paint and paint choices and a formidable “gift presentation” for that money. I’ve read that some had issues with closing the lid, to those reviewers I would suggest that after you’ve done your best to secure the lid, grip the set on both sides firmly, lift the gray up above eye level, and you will see exactly if each of the four sides are secured into the flaps, there is sort of a “ledge” that the flap is supposed to fold around. For me, I’ve noticed if I do this, and notice a part of the plastic ledge that isn’t secured, I reopen it, ( after replacing the set on the table, and slanting the tray up slightly, so that I can see the side that needs readjustment), visually make sure that the ledge and flap are fitted properly and snapped into place, and repeat for the remaining three sides.

Great beginner set
Our youngest granddaughter is a budding artist and loves anything to do with painting. I got this set for her to try her hand at a different medium. She is familiar with watercolors and acrylics, so I thought this set would be a nice way for her to try out new techniques. The variety of colors is astounding and they are all so vibrant. The little tubs are a bit difficult to manage if you want to take out just one color, but that doesn't seem to bother her. (She is way more patient than I am.) Getting just the right saturation takes some practice, but, again, she is very patient. My one concern about this set is whether the colors might dry out before they are used up and how easy is it to reconstitute a tub that has dried up. Time will tell on that; but for the price and given the volume of colors in this set, I think it will prove its worth. And if she gets hooked on gouache, we will look at additional options.
