DOC HOLLIDAY IN TOMBSTONE 1881
This made at a time when the old clean-cut cowboy image of the '50s and much of the '60s became a thing of the past, the actors could now get dusty and unshaven (a trend also of course seen in The Spaghetti Westerns around that time)The film tells of Doc Holiday (Stacy Keach) a feared gunman linking-up with Kate Elder (Faye Dunnaway) a good-time gal' as a result of winning her in a card game. The two head for Tombstone to link-up with Doc's old friend Wyatt Earp (Harris Yulin) a regional Marshall who is trying to get elected as the town sheriff with a mind to clean-up the town in more ways than one.Wyatt has a problem with local Cowboy-Member Ike Clanton, an issue that was set to boil over leading to the legendary gunfight at the O.K Coral October 26th 1881Other than the lead acts Stacy Keach and Faye Dunnaway, the remainder of the casting is perhaps a little weak. The storyline itself though often gritty with a few violent and threat sequences is somewhat historically fanciful, it's a Hollywood make-over.(only three died during the gunfight)I myself have seen several versions of the events surrounding the infamous gunfight, the most accurate probably being the Kevin Costner 1994 film WYATT EARP, the most entertaining probably Kurt Russell 1993 version TOMBSTONE .....(both worthy of a viewing)The picture quality on Blu-ray okay but not brilliant.Footnote - The film can be hired/bought to watch currently on Prime also.

What's up doc?
A professional gambler, part time leather slapper and all time trouble maker rolls into Tombstone with his latest acquisition, a prostitute by the name of Katie Elder, who he's recently won in a game of snap. On arriving in town it is not long before his old friend and U.S. Marshall, Wyatt Earp has a proposal for him. A proposal that would lead to the most famous gun fight in wild west legend..Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Stacy Keach plays 'Doc' Holliday, Dunaway is Elder and Yulin given the dubious honour of playing a somewhat unusually depicted Earp. For me all three of them doing an excellent job, which comes as no surprise, especially from Keach as he's one of the most underrated Hollywood actors of all time.If you know the western genre you will know what to expect from this, given its cast and when it was made. 'Revisionist' westerns, where the ideal of the matinee hero was dumped in favour of a more gritty, brutal and nihilistic approach was attempted, in a response to the spirit of changes in society's attitudes toward America. A want to be shown things in a more realistic honesty, brought about by the cultural revolution of the 60's (due to Vietnam, civil rights etc).Anyway, sorry.... So Earp is shown to be a nasty piece of work and is given a knuckle butty by Ike Clanton, which has the end result of him dragging the rather sick and wearily uncertain Doc into his feud. This leads to some great character work, crazy eyes and a few bloody gun downs and is perfect for a late night western, when the whisky is still flowing and you feel like watching some tough, laconic action from the seventies.Easily 4/5 but the disc, although the picture is decent enough and in wide screen, the sound is awfully quiet and there's not a single extra present, lest you count scene selection!Happy trails.

The best version.
This is one of the better versions of the Gunfight at the OK Corral, if not the best one.Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday were real people, and have been portrayed many timesbefore, but this is a revisionist Western, and here we have a more truthful version ofthe real West.Doc Holliday went to the West because he had TB, and met up with Wyatt Earp, aswell as "Big Nose Kate", although she isn't called that here. Kate Elder became DocHolliday's partner, and here there is a lot more of their relationship, albeit, withsome poetic historial license. The Gunfight at the OK Corral, must be the most detailed gunfight in WesternHistory, as there were many witnesses, and a Court trial, but still, the folkloreremains. This version is maybe more accurate than others, as the gunfight onlylasted 30 seconds, and here Wyatt Earp is a man driven by greed and politicalambition, and Doc just wants "something else" before he dies of TB.The cast is great, and music is by Jimmy Webb!?! In fact, I'd go as far as to say, this has to be the best film version of The Gunfight at the OK Corral!

I'm sick and tired of killing...
According to Stacy Keach and Alan Heim's interviews, this movie is not as revisionist as it could have been and it's a shame because the more interesting scenes have been cut so the final movie results more ''traditional'' than the one depicted in the script. Nevertheless I enjoyed it because the three main characters who have been heroes for a long time actually...
