Great basic overview of U.S. History and far more interesting to read than any school textbook.

Questionable preface
There is a different author for the second edition and it tells. I read the preface and I was shocked at the statements. The author tried to praise the hispanics in the US, being proud of his heritage. I encourage that, but in the process he actually insulted them. There were statements like “they are typically fluent in English by the third generation”. All other immigrants are actually fluent by the second generation as English is the official language in US and it is used everywhere. Most European immigrants, including Spaniards, coming from the same language background, are fluent within the first generation. Similarly, I know first generation Mexican immigrants who are fluent in English, so this blank statement does not reflect well.
