Board bustin banshees from landlocked America! Surfin' The Great Lakes takes a largely instrumental spin through the surf rock and surf themed gems. It's a massive swell of great music from Minneapolis' Kay Bank Recordings in the '60s! From the twistin' twitcher Trashmen, stripped down Chuck Berry covers, Mancini jams cut by The Mustangs, to The Satisfactions doing their take on a Beach Boys B-side! This sonic tsunami of West Coast surf and R&B music from pasty Midwestern youth is largely tunes that floated below sea level for over 50 years but also some surf greats like The Vaqueros' cold water longing for an "80 Foot Wave." Surfs up! 1. Jonah - The Vaqueros 2. Heaven’s Devil - The Boss Tweads 3. Caliente - The Marauders 4. Island In The Sun - The Vaqueros 5. Shot In The Dark - The Mustangs 6. Disintegration - The Readymen 7. Comin’ Home - The Vaqueros 8. Girl Don’t Tell Me - The Satisfactions 9. (Brian Wilson) 10. 80 Foot Wave - The Vaqueros 11. Za Boo - The Valients 12. Bird Gasp ‘65 - The Trashmen 13. Surfin’ Blues - The Readymen 14. The Furys - Little Queenie (instrumental version) 15. (Chuck Berry) 16. Space Journey Ranger 7 - The Vaqueros 17. Surf Beat - The Chancellors 18. Greensleeves - The Trashmen 19. Wine Wine Wine (instrumental version) - The Bleach Boys 20. Baba Yaga (instrumental version) - The Pagans 21. Beach Girl - The Valients 22. Hey Little One (instrumental version) - The Shandells 23. Shortnin’ Bread (instrumental version) - The Readymen 24. Lizzy Lost Her Beach Ball - T Lawrence Sherwood Greens Review: Excellent! - The songs are good, the sound quality is very good, you"ll like it! Review: Kay Bank Surfs..... - Kay Bank located in Minneapolis, Minnesota was a Midwest stopping point for groups in that part of the country looking to elevate their sound in a studio that had a highly respected reputation. The Vaqueros are one of the better bands that came along via rediscovery in selected songs found in previous V/A collections, many decades after their brief career. All of their instrumental songs are in this set and they are quite good. The Trashmen the most famous group of the bunch from the "Surfin' Bird" top ten hit get two songs. The speedy rearrangement of "Greensleeves" has a surf reverb effect on steroids. The rest of the songs in the collection are a mixed bag of solid numbers and passible garage vibe feel that are quite listenable. There are though a couple of vocal choices that are honestly shaky. They get by only because of the Surfin' concept in the package as a whole. So the final call is very good for repeated playback.
