Great Upgrade from Baro 9
After using my Suunto 9 Baro for six years, I decided to try the Suunto Race. I was looking for a better experience with the watch face (better visibility) and for a better heart rate capture (no more wild jumps, or having to wear the watch in the exact spot with the exact pressure). So far, I’m impressed with both. The screen is very easy to view and has all of the features you expect from Suunto. The heart rate monitor seems to be WAY more accurate as I haven’t experienced the same crazy heart rate swings I would see on my Suunto 9 Baro. For instance, I would walk with my old Baro and at times the readout would say my heart rate was 200+ beats per minute. With this accuracy also comes better calorie burn metrics. Let’s just say, I will need to reduce the calorie intake using this watch rather than the Baro 9. In short, I would say that it’s essentially the same watch, feel, size (slightly smaller height)) as I had before with some of the more annoying features of the old watch worked out. I will still use the Baro 9, but only when I’m afraid I will damage the new watch, like when I mountain bike. There was one issue where the watch disconnected from my Suunto App and it took me about an hour to figure out what was happening. Not only do you have disconnect the watch from Bluetooth, forget the watch on your Bluetooth list on the phone and one more step. Buried deep in the “connectivity” folder of the watch, you’ll find an additional connection to the app to your phone. You have to also disconnect this, otherwise the app won’t allow to connect after a soft reset.

Sports focus smartwatch with less distractions
This watch is for sports and health monitoring. I love that it's really minimal and I wear it around without the phone. The GPS has been fairly good in the city and I have used with to map my Kayaking trips. It's has pretty good battery life for a watch that isn't massive with a circular shape. I would say it's one of the least ugly smart watches out there. I find I get a good use of it to track my sleep. I don't find it uncomfortable to have it on at night and I have very small wrists. The whole watch face actually spans the thickness of my wrist, I couldn't find another watch with the same functions any smaller. I'm happy with my purchase and will probably continue to use it for the next year or two.

Excellent GPS, battery life and screen. Mediocre heart rate.
There are so many in-depth reviews of this watch, buyers know what they are getting. I will only add a few observations since upgrading from the Ambit 3 Peak that I used for 6 years. The screen is excellent: easy to read, crisp, best of the best. Battery life is best in class, nothing better. The GPS accuracy is excellent. Maps & routing work great. Underwater depth gauge is unique and cool. The heart rate accuracy is mediocre. It's not terrible, but it is not as good as competitors. It sometimes gives very incorrect readings for several minutes at a time. Like climbing up a steep hill with your heart rate in the 160-180 range yet it reads 85 which is about half the true heart rate. Buyers should know that Suunto just released a new version of this watch called the "Race S" that does everything the "Race" does, but is smaller, cheaper, with an improved heart rate sensor. Even so, I'm keeping my Race.

Great watch at a great price
This is my favorite watch. The charge last for several days (5+). The screen is the best I have seen. It is light and easy to wear. I just bought the new Apple Ultimate Watch 3. It is very nice but feels like wearing a brick on your wrist and it has a very short battery life. This is the best watch I own. Not to big and not to small. Just right!

Get a Coros Instead
The Good: Clear display and good battery life The Bad: The heart rate accuracy is awful. I see it skip around 70-90 bpm for an entire run, then yesterday I did a 9 miler, and this watch said I averaged 172bpm! I compared this to my Coros watch, which put me accurately right around 145bpm. My Garmin had similar accuracy to Coros. The running cadence is measured in rpm and not steps. e.g. The watch cadence shows 85-90, so you have to double that number to get an accurate running cadence. Maths while running is hard. I reached out to customer service who said there was a setting for it, but they didn't know where it was located, and we were unable to find it. The 5 or 6 times I have tried to use the "find my phone" function, it can never connect to it. I just tried it again with no luck, and the phone is on my desk next to me. However, if I go to the app on my phone, connect to the phone, sync activities, then try the "find my phone" function, it will work. The problem here is, if I don't know where my phone is, how can I sync it to the watch with the app? I'm getting awful rashes and burn marks from the band. I take it off to shower, and make sure it's dry when I put it on, but they won't go away. The rashes cut open and bleed sometimes during longer efforts, even if I don't have the band that tight. When I go for a bike ride, the watch won't stay high enough on the wrist to prevent from the dial digging into the back of my hand. To the point where it cut open my skin in the last race and I was bleeding from it. I try to pull it up on my wrist and tighten the band, but it still slides down as I ride. The magnet on the charger is weak. It's easy to bump it off and not realize it's no longer charging. Why not just make a clip one, or one that locks into place? This would help for longer events when you need to charge it in your pack. The app takes forever to load activities. I also cannot edit the display of an activity while I'm doing it. e.g. If I'm out for a run, and I decide I want to see my average pace, I cannot go into the phone app and add avg pace to the watch screen without stopping the current activity first. The menus for controls and activities seem haphazard and disorganized. I've slowly gotten used to them, but there are other watches with menus that seem to flow better. I reached out to customer service on these issues, and it looked like they just copied and pasted responses back, and said have nice day. Pretty disappointing experience. At this point, I'm just wearing it because I spent money on it, but I can't say I'm enjoying it. It will probably end up on eBay or at Goodwill.

This is my third Suunto. While there are competitors with some great options, I've always loved the style and build quality of the Suunto brand. Battery life is truly insane. I've had the watch for over six weeks training with GPS and heartrate a minimum of 4 times a week and I've only had to change it twice so far. GPS is spot on accurate, and always has been. The over the air updates are a nice edition, and the new OLED screen is bright and beautiful. There are more options than most casual to very serious athletes will ever need to train or compete with. Minor gripes are easy to live with - the training terminology used on the app is hard to follow if you're not used to the Training Peaks app but Suunto seems to be adding new documentation on their YouTube channel to help learn how to use those parts of the watch to train and compete at the top level. Also, I've read that the heartrate monitor isn't great. It's much better and more consistent than the Suunto 9 I upgraded from, and if I was really concerned with the 2 or 3 % difference I've seen complained about, a Bluetooth chest monitor is a very accurate and reasonably priced add-on. This is easily the best Suunto I've ever had. Would HIGHLY recommend to anyone not already in love with another brand of sports watch or that wants a rugged watch with a ton of sports options and killer battery life.

Very decent battery life (many days in my case - depends on the use, but definitely times longer than, say, Samsung), bright screen, good sensors, fast GPS, a good menu of activity programs and health analytics. Simple intuitive interface and controls. It's not as sleek as Samsung or Apple, doesn't have features like pay or phone replacement, but as a sports watch it's great. Suunto's bike sensors are not available. Haven't tried yet integration with 3rd party Bluetooth bike sensor set..
