This authentic Irish one pence is approximately 31 mm and is composed of copper. The chain comes in chain length options between 16 and 36 inches. An elegant gift box and lifetime warranty are included. "The Irish Free State" was formed in 1922, and four years later a committee led by poet William Butler Yeats decided on the design of the country's first coins. The Gaelic Harp was to be the national symbol on the front of every coin, while the backs would feature a series of farm animals, a different one assigned to each denomination. Only coins minted in those first nine years-between 1928 and 1937-bear the original Gaelic Harp and the text saorstát éireann (Irish Free State) in Gaelic script on the front. It was given a new design in 1940 with a simplified harp and with the country's new name "éire" (Ireland) appearing in a generic font that replaced the Gaelic script of the original design.
