A new prospective
Firstly this book is excellent. It is not for absolute beginners as it expects you to have some knowledge to be able to make the most of the material. Having said that, if you purchase both books 1&2 it will provide you with a lot of information all articulated very well. As with all these teaching books you need to read through it a few times to get a better understanding and practice is essential as it always is. I have learnt a lot from both books and feel they will be a source of reference for a long time. The DVDs are also helpful and add to the learning process.

Different from most other tutor books
This book reaches parts that other books don't. The written introduction (that takes up about a third of the book) is informative as well as very entertaining. It answered a lot of questions that I had but didn't like asking other guitarists for fear of being thought of as "uncool." I am just starting the excersises and would like to point out that this book is definitely NOT for beginners. Unless you have a fairly good knowledge of music and the guitar I think you would struggle. I would say this book is for Intermediate students who want to improve their technique and undertanding of theory including scales and modes. Modes are starting to make sense to me now whereas other books just seem to skim over the subject. There are also excersises to improve flexibility and speed. all in all its an excellent book and I will definitely be buying the 2nd one in the series as soon as I manange to get through this one!

Cannot stress how much you need this book!!
I bought this book on a single recommendation, if you do not know Guthrie Govan, please go onto YouTube now and just see. Not only is he an extension to the guitar but he also knows all the theory behind it, and in this book combines the two. Whether you are an absolute beginner or intermediate to advanced guitarist I highly recommend buying this book along with the second one. I'm an advanced guitarist currently taking my degree in music and performance at university and even though I know most of the areas he covers, it's always great to get other peoples renditions of it! Best guitar books I've ever owned, must buy!

Outstanding.
Guthrie is exactly what any student would want in a teacher: an excellent communicator, encyclopaedic knowledge of his subject, and a most humble and egoless personality. The book covers all the relevant areas and is presented in a logical and systematic fashion. Whether you're beginning, or have been playing for a while, this book will meet all your needs and will no doubt be one you'll reference and come back to time after time.

Unexpectedly not crammed with tab
Beware. The first Half of this book is just pages and pages of TEXT. Granted, Govan has lots of wisdom to share and he writes really well in an engaging way. It feels like a set up to make you buy the second book, towards the final pages you really start to get to the good stuff then it ends. Sneaky.

awesome
this is a great tutor, but its not for beginners, the more advanced of us will love this for its insight into Guthrie's killer riffing and the hints and tabs. that once perfected will lead to improved solo-ing a must for any player
