Better than peat moss, but watch out for the dust when you first dump it out.
Better than peat moss and its renewable! But be sure to wear a mask when dumping it out of the package. Before the coir is "watered" it is very dry & dusty and will fill the air with dust. And if you can help it, don't use it on a wind day. Coco coir is great to use for starting seedlings and makes a great ammendment to the soil along with some good compost, of course. It is a great tool for moisture control! When there is too much water it absorbs it and when the plants are thirsty it releases its water to the plants. I use it in my raised bed gardens in Mel's Mix recipe instead of peat moss and it works great! I definitely recommend this product.

This is not a potting mix. It's just straight unwashed coco fiber
I have no earthly idea why this product is considered to be good by anyone. Ok, the texture is acceptable. That's it. Other than that, it's NOT a potting mix. The word "mix" usually implies the presence of more than one ingredient, but this stuff is just straight coir fiber. It has plenty of non-fertilizer "junk" in it, meaning if you run some clean water through it, you'll get about 1300ppm of who knows what- most likely salt and potassium- the two things that should be washed out of coir fiber before it's used. At least the pH is good at about 6.0.

Requires I hour pre-soaking. It makes a lot. Quality product - no sticks, stones or lumps
Used to make a growing mix for container gardening:1/4 coir fiber1/4 perlite1/4 organic soil1/4 compostYou will want to also add fertilizer and minerals depending on the specifi plants you pln to grow.

Very good product to add to you inddor/outdoor garden
I used this product in a 50/50 blend by volume with Miracle Grow Soil with only half my garden and, it could be a coincidence but they ended up being almost 2x the size of the other plants in said garden. Some being the exact same genetics....I did notice that water drained faster and didn't sog down the soil into a clay like the 100% reg potting mix I used. I highly recommend you add this to your soil mixes

NOT COCO CHIPS!!
Just delivered today, returning tomorrow. Description uses the word “chips”.. nope, just fine coir. For those looking for coir, the top description says 9lbs & the shipping weight somewhere in the middle says 5lbs - it’s 9lbs for your information. Very upset over misleading description!! Seller should be accurate!!

The answer to why some bags are harder to work with!
I think I know why some people say the coir is easy to break apart and some say it's hard! I ordered 2 bags at the same time (same order, Amazon was the seller), but got 2 different bags that arrived on different days (possibly from different locations)Bag 1I was surprised how easy it was pull apart. I had a screwdriver and hammer for chipping off slices, but I could break most of it off with my bare hands. I could grab a chunk of it in one hand, squeeze, and it would just crumble into a fine light orange dust (I'm strong, but on the petite side, so not super muscled). Mixing with water to rinse it was a breeze. It just melted into the water. This coir was red orange when wet.Bag 2It was half the size of Bag 1 that I thought it was a mistake and checked to see who made it. Still Hydrofarm, with the same paper insert - both inserts said Plant!t with different graphics than what's pictured here. The coir was darker though (think auburn, dark red). I opened it and realized that it was several times more compressed. I couldn't break anything off with my hands, I used my screwdriver and hammer, and it was like pounding into really hard wood. I couldn't do it from the square surface, I had to go from the narrower sides. The screwdriver was really hard to pull out too, I had to use both hands and foot. The screwdriver was hot! That's how much friction was going on. I was only able to break it with my hands after I got the large pieces down to 1 cm sheets. I'm not sure an overnight soaking would have worked, it was so dense! Bigger pieces weren't breaking down in water, I had to use my hands and break them down. I finally got everything down to 2"x1" pieces and those took their time, but did eventually expand and become soft coir. When dry, this coir is much rougher than the coir from Bag 1, I felt like I was getting splinters while working with it. I don't think I did, but I am seeing a few flakes of skin coming off my hands.Hydrofarm either has some quality consistency issues, is trying to cut down on shipping volume, or just happens to be switching manufacturers right now. I don't know, but either way, Bag 2 was really frustrating to work with, so be aware that you could end up with that one.Tip for washing the coir:Use smart pots! These are cloth pots that are great for planting and "air pruning" roots. They are also perfect for containing the coir for washing as water just passes right through them. Coir tends to settle at the bottom when water leaves, so to really mix it up well I put the coir-filled pots into a plastic bin, filled both up with water and stirred up the settled coir. Then I pulled the entire bag out of the bin, put it aside to drain on its own, and emptied the water from the bin.

A lot of coco in a small package.
Expanded to well over the amount stated. I filled a tub with water and placed the compacted coir in the water and left it overnight. Finished by morning and ready to use. I don't have patience so that's why I soaked it over night. That's my shortcoming and not the products.I will never use peat moss again. Not that it's not a good product but it is heavy, takes time to reconstitute and is compost miles unfriendly and non renewable. In fact I'm getting spring fever and will order more this week. It's made a difference in my garden 'beach'. My soil is just like sand but my recent cooperative extension soil analysis said the organic matter is 3%. Up from zilch. Compost has helped but this is a lot of organic matter fast!

Easy to work with...
I have never used this type of planting mix before. Actually I always thought it was more for hydroponics. I wanted something to repot my houseplants that would hold more moisture. I did not mis any other soils with it. My plants seem to be doing fine and even growing. It was very easy to expand the block. I used my wheelbarrow because it says it makes alot of soil. It does. I think it will work out well and I am quite pleased with it at this time.
