I ordered this in preparation for a crazy winter in Texas. Like you, I read the reviews... It works and I really like it. It does NOT get hot. The high settings is a cozy warm. I use it when I am studying or on the couch. (My apartment is chilly at night.) It's a nice little heating lap blanket if it's chilly. Fortunately I did not have to test it if the power is off. I really like the USB aspect. It's a nice thing to have if you know what you are getting.

I had this product for 4 months (bought in February 2024). I used it to stay warm at work. It was sitting in my chair and it burned a hole through the cover and burned a hole in my chair. Will not be purchasing this again.

Great for what it is. USB is very handy for when you don't have an outlet nearby. I use this for work since I can plug it into the computer. It is very soft. Heats fully in about 10 min.Downside is it gives me crazy static shock! It's also a bit small, but perfect for warming the lap or around shoulders. If you get a power bank you can wear it around the house as a shawl!

As I pulled this out of the package, the fabric was very soft. I found the plug inside as I plugged it in. I noticed a very tiny square maybe 12 x 12“ on the inside that was the extent of the area that is supposed to heat up. I waited and waited had it on high and could barely feel the heat it is going back.
