With "a poetic sensibility that evokes the fantastical sound world of the early Romantics" (San Francisco Chronicle), 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition winner Seong-Jin Cho explores the music of Claude Debussy as the 100th anniversary of the composer's death approaches. Seong-Jin Cho's third album on Deutsche Grammophon features Debussy's most popular works and cycles, such as Images I & II, Suite Bergamasque and Children's Corner.

A Good But Not Great Debussy Recital From Cho
There’s no question in my mind that Seong-Jin Cho has a long career ahead of him. He is, quite simply, a great pianist with an exquisite sense of rhythm and understanding for a work’s architecture. The positives aside for a minute and the reason I’m allotting this recording with three 3-stars (actually, 3 & ½) is, while Cho does play “Suite Bergamasque” quite well, I’m not as convinced by his performances of “Children’s Corner” or “Images, Series I & II”. It seems the energy found in “Suite Bergamasque” is missing in these two other performances. Cho handles all of the technical demands of these pieces, but I don’t really hear anything personal being displayed nor do I hear him digging deeper into the music. Of course, Cho is young and will have plenty of time to mature. I do hope he records more Debussy, but I also hope that he has something a bit more personal to express next time around, so 3 & ½ stars for the performance of “Suite Bergamasque” which is great and the superb audio quality that Deutsche Grammophon has given Cho.Reference performances:“Images, Series I & II” - Paul Jacobs, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Zoltán Kocsis“Children’s Corner” - Zoltán Kocsis, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli“Suite Bergamasque” - Zoltán Kocsis, Philippe Cassard

Quality was not there!
I had been listening to Seong's version of Clair De Lune for months, on YouTube, on my laptop. I bought the CD, and first played it on my old 'bomb box'. It sounded muffled and I had to turn it up quite a bit. The next day, I played it on my old Bose, which is still an excellent machine, and the sound quality just wasn't there! I returned the CD. I love his rendition and am disappointed. It sounded awful in my car also.

pas au point
Malgré les commentaires élogieux, cette interprétation est beaucoup trop évanescente et on s'endort à l'entendre. Le piano n'est pas net.
