Our ode to the art of trail building, the Builder Pack is a tribute to all the hardy souls who build and maintain trails around the world. Conceived more than 15 years ago with the goal of helping trail builders get into the backcountry with all their tools on two wheels, the Builder Pack has continually been refined through feedback from some of the world’s foremost trail builders—and this smaller, 25-liter version is designed to get you and your tools deep into remote build zones that require extensive pedaling. With ample storage for snacks, gloves, extra clothes and first-aid essentials, the Builder Pack covers the basics, while also allowing for low-center-of-gravity carriage of heavier power tools and a chainsaw. The flatbed chassis with anchors enables the pack to be configured in multiple ways for different body types and tool transport, while external straps cinch down longer tools such as rakes, Pulaskis, McLeods and the trusty 5-gallon bucket. With a sturdy, 30-millimeter waistbelt and a sternum strap with an integrated rescue whistle, weight is kept low and close to the body to give freedom of movement for pedaling. And large, zippered side pockets give storage for fuel, spare batteries and water. The 25-liter Builder Pack carries everything you need to get into the backcountry and rake in that sweet new line.

Well thought out pack
The designers obviously put a lot of thought into this pack. Saw, fuel, and accessories all fit in the pack. Well done and it seems like it should last me a long while. The price is steep, but I feel like it's worth it.

Best pack for trail building
I'm a volunteer hiking trail builder/maintainer. Most of us who are chainsaw-certified have this pack. It carries the saw, fuel/oil, and all the PPE and tools you need (if you wear your helmet). It is sturdy, has lots of pockets, and was designed for hauling heavy loads. The sternum strap slides up and down to accommodate different sizes and the hip belt and shoulder straps are fully adjustable. I'm 5'4", female, and average build. It fits me fine. It would be nice is Dakine had a video or manual that explained the features. Dakine's video is conceptual, about the trail-building community, not really the pack features. I've been eyeing this for a while, waiting for the price to come down. I got the jungle color that was on sale at deep discount. The tag inside said it was a S22 model (this is Feb 24). No complaints, though. Carrying a full-sized shovel or similar tool would be pretty clunky, but it would be for any pack.

Perfect pack for trail maintenance
I volunteer with several trail maintenance groups in the western NC mountains. I am a certified chainsaw sawyer by the USFS, and often have to carry my chainsaw 10+ miles on steep trails to reach fallen trees and return. This pack holds my saw, PPE, fuel and oil, along with personal gear. Very comfortable, considering the shape and weight of the load. This is the old version of this pack, but still available and I like it better than the new design. Get one before they are gone!

Very good for most trail work.
Very well constructed and many pockets/areas to keep various tools. Walked about. 6 miles today clearing the IAT. Rode well and very comfortable with a load weight of approximately 40 lbs including a chainsaw. Only complaint that others also mentioned is only one lined pocket. Gas goes in that pocket and oll has to ride in an unlined pocket with potential to create a big mess,

Best trail backpack.
I use this building trails for a bike park. I carry my chainsaw and all the tools I need on the trail. Pack has held up to my two years of abuse.

It's almost perfect.
Recently purchased this pack so I could hike my saw into the woods and free up my hands for walking my dogs. The bag is spacious with lots of pockets and compartments to keep gear well organized. Things that would make me rethink purchasing this pack. The chainsaw pocket is honestly pretty small, I have a MS 171 with a 14 inch bar and the handle doesn't fit into the chainsaw pocket. Stihl's smaller saw hardly fits into a bag specifically designed to carry a saw, kinda wild. Also the placement of the fuel/oil and saw pockets being the furthest away from your body makes the weight very apparent. Anyone who backpacks knows heavy stuff goes close to the body. The hip strap is made for larger users. Definitely a cool bag but they could've done it better.

does a fantastic job for me!
works like a charm for my needs. my stihl ms251 fits nicely and I can carry fuel/oil mix and bar oil. The interior pocket holds my helmet w/ear muffs and face shield as well as my chaps and sharpener/bar clamp/extra chain/and a few hand tools. it aint light after all that but it holds solid and I can actually ride my mountain bike to trouble spots.
