Avoid the cheaper 'sta-tite' Grovers like these
I've had Grovers on plenty of guitar's and been happy with them. There seem to be two types of open 'sta-tite' available; the better quality ones have a cast base plate, and a finer 18:1 drive. The cheaper ones shown here use pressed steel plates, with open-ended 'hooks' to hold the main worm drive shaft. In practise, these are very poor.. there is too much slop in the system, causing poor tuning, lots of slop in use, and annoying vibrations. Tightening the tension screw doesn't help. In the end, I resorted to centre-punching around the periphery of the 'hooks' holding the worm drive shaft, to take up the excessive clearance. A real bodge I know; but it works. The vibration was still awful, and not only came from the loose drive shaft, but also from the chrome buttons vibrating on their shafts: It took ages for me to finally track that down! Superglue wicked into the joint fixed that. These were on the guitar when I got it.. otherwise I would've sent them back. Very poor indeed, and not what you expect from Grover.
