Q: How big are these actually? The picture looks like they are a serious choking hazard for an 18m old.

I gave them to my daughter at that age because she doesn't mouth things and she is supervised. The chips could definitely fit entirely in her mouth, though they may be too big to actually fit into the throat. Even if she tried to swallow them, I don't think they would go anywhere. This is a wonderful open ended toy and I highly recommend it! She has come up with so many ways to play with it! I love Plan Toys!

Q: Since the bowls are composite, will they hold water?

I haven't tried, but I would not use wood bowls for water.

The bowl measure 3 1/4 inch in diameter. The coins measure 1 3/8 inch in diameter.

Q: What is this made out of?

The cups are kind of a composite wood and the chips are painted wood.
