2013 two CD collection from the legendary R&B singer/songwriter. After years of ill health, 2012 saw Bobby Womack enjoy a remarkable career renaissance. Encouraged by his daughter he accepted Damon Albarn's invitation to provide vocals on several tracks for the Gorillaz 2011 album. This collaboration proved so popular that Albarn then produced Bobby's first new recordings for some years. The resulting album, the Bravest Man in the Universe, brought Bobby Womack back into the spotlight. Charly Records are proud to present this unique compilation which collates every single a and B -side Womack released on the Minit, Liberty and United Artists labels between 1967 and 1976. Filled with classics of the genre, this anthology examines one of the most talented singer/songwriters, guitarists and producers to grace the Soul spectrum. Presenting a unique look at Womack's career, this collection is perfect for collectors and newcomers alike.

Bobby Whoa!!!Mack!
Bobby. Bobby Womack is a guitarist/singer/songwriter from Cleveland, Ohio. Bobby Womack has played with many huge names in the Soul, Rock and Roll, and Pop worlds. The greatest musician Bobby Womack has ever played with is Bobby Womack. This is a collection of singles released from 1967-1976 by Bobby Womack. Many of these singles by Bobby Womack are hard to find in this day and age. This collection of Bobby Womack singles is an incredible deal. Bobby Womack is greatly under appreciated and you should buy pretty much any Bobby Womack material you can get your hands on. But this Bobby Womack release is special to me because there are quite a few songs by Bobby Womack that I've never heard before. And they are great songs by Bobby Womack. Bobby. Womack. Bobby. Womack. If you like Bobby Womack, you should definitely dig into this collection of songs by Bobby Womack. They have a very Bobby Womack feel to them. If you are unfamiliar with Bobby Womack, this is a great introduction to Bobby Womack. Womack.

A "singles" collection that doesn't bother using the single versions?
I'm not reviewing the music itself here -- Bobby Womack as an artist is without peer and his singles from this era are pretty great throughout (though it should be noted that Womack's albums from the mid-70s were consistently great and should be heard in their entirety). The problem with this set is that it's called "The Singles," but the songs on this comp aren't the single versions -- they're all the album versions, which have been on CD for years (and sounding much worse than the versions on the best-of album EMI put out a couple of years back). In many cases, the actual single mixes, edits and performances are very different from the versions that made it on to the albums. The early 45s were dedicated mono mixes, but they use the stereo mixes here. The single of "Daylight" is a completely different vocal than you're used to hearing and the b-side, "Trust Me" (incorrectly called "Trust In Me" on this package) should be the version without Womack's spoken intro, but, again, this comp doesn't bother with that.Fans can argue which versions are better, but if you're going to sell a singles collection and attempt to tell that side of Womack's story, it goes without saying you should use the single masters. If you already have the albums, there's nothing new here. Just the same songs in a different order in a package that is almost nice but pretty sloppily constructed (my booklet came loose on day one and the artwork under the trays is badly mis-aligned. The liner notes are pretty great, though, well written, with loads of comments from the man himself.

Imprescindible

A & B Sides 1967-76
Following his much publicised artistic renaissance over the past few years, this is a welcome Bobby Womack compilation. Featuring every A & B side that he released on the Minit, Liberty & United Artists labels in America between 1967 and 1976, the quality of the music across the 50 tracks is at times outstanding. Presented in chronological order with each A-side followed by the B-side, it's a selection of original compositions, covers and a few live recordings and Womack retains his own unique sound throughout. A talented guitarist and vocalist he is, despite the covers versions, also a very talented songwriter.Highlights include much of his early work where the sound is predominately of the Southern Soul variety and showcases his guitar playing skills. His interpretations of 'Californian Dreamin'' and 'I Left My Heart In San Francisco' are superb with the former being stripped back in comparison to the original but still very funky. 'Across 110th Street' is a master class in song writing and with Womack's rich vocals it is the defining sound of Blaxploitation. Things get seriously smooth at times on the second disc and you do wonder how '(If You Don't Want My Love) Give It Back' was deemed only worthy of being a B-side. Given that this collection includes flip sides there are naturally a few fillers but, on the whole, the standard rarely falters.Whether you're a newcomer to Womack's music or a long standing fan, there's something to enjoy for everyone on this collection. Clocking in at a generous 2 hours and 35 minutes, the two discs are housed inside a book style digipak with well written liner notes that feature brief individual notes on most of the 50 songs.
