The book is broken up into four sections which cover the key components of off grid living: home building examples; home electrical systems; water source ideas; and heating/cooling/plumbing. It covers different types of examples in each section along with cost projections, and pros/cons. The book does not make any recommendations that you should go one way or another. Rather, it lays out the information in an easy to read and understandable manner so that you can make an informed decision as to what would suit your needs.I found this book extremely beneficial as I did not know much of the information it cites. If you are like me and you are considering off grid living but don’t know where to start or what you should be considering to go off grid living, this book will be a great starting resource for you.

Wow! If you are thinking about taking the plunge to live off grid, this is your go to book! Lots of thorough research about various homes to build and how to comfortable live in them. The author truly thought of everything. The book is well organized and very easy to read. Tremendous insight as to how to go about achieving your goal - everything from the types of homes to build - from tiny homes to cob houses and from box homes to Earth-sheltered or Barndominiums. I never knew there were so many options. There are wonderful pros and cons listed for each project along with great insight as to materials needed, type of foundation to consider, site prep, maintenance, cost analysis and so much more! The author also provides valuable information regarding the many creative ways to power your home. Insightful considerations are given for every task. Finally an off-grid book written in plain language - so helpful in every way!

This is a great book for beginners as it briefly touches on a lot of different topics and is a wonderful jumping off point for those who haven't done any sort of building. However, if you already have some general knowledge, this likely isn't the book for you.

This book is EXCELLENT! The author does a terrific job of describing the various options for an off grid homestead. The subjects are well organized and there is plenty of detail. In the back of the book, he lists a number of YT videos and links for additional information on various subjects.Categories for off grid living are separated by chapter with plenty of information and photos. After reading his book, I feel more prepared to make choices on what I will need to implement living off grid. It seems very doable now.Because of the excellent information provided in this book, I've just ordered his book on Farm Animals.

This book contains very helpful insight for those beginning their off grid journey. It is well laid out into 4 parts, and I found each part full of helpful and detailed information.I liked how part 1 compares 19 types of off grid house types, with pros & cons, labor and material needs, and tables showing cost per square foot and build time. Part 2 covers off grid electrical systems—Solar, Wind, Hydro, and Generators—explaining how each works, with schematics and cost breakdowns. I really appreciated the attention to detail.Part 3 details off grid water systems, including well drilling, pump sizing and depth, and pressure tank installation. And part 4 explores off grid heating and cooling options like geothermal, hydronic floors, and passive/active solar water heating, with energy-saving tips.I learned so much from this book! It’s clear and concise, and for those seeking a great foundation of helpful information for off the grid housing, this is a great place to start!

This book is a great idea builder if you are staring your journey on researching and building a strategy for off grid living spaces. From simple and easy builds taking less than 2 weeks to complicated and expensive ideas. There are even ideas in here if you have building experience with options like the folding homes… very cool. I found myself looking up lots of the information online and learned details about terminology and building types I wouldn’t have known about before reading it. With the information this book provides I can confidently think about requirements needed in different climates, for example. Something I was a bit uncomfortable with before.I like the fact that each topic is covered with the same simple format allowing me to easily skip around to find just the thing I’m looking for and comprehension easy.Covering: shelter, water, power, heating/cooling & plumbing use this book to help build and integrate the elements of your plan.
