My favorite pencil by FAR.
I love this pencil. So much, that when I lost my old one (left it somewhere when traveling), I immediately knew I needed to get a new one. It feels amazing, it's nice and heavy, feels like the quality item that it is, and has never let me down. You do need to be a bit careful with it (so it may not be ideal for kids), as it's possible to bend the metal shroud around the tip of the emerging lead if you drop it on a hard surface tip-first. This pencil is my favorite writing instrument, and it's what I use for my daily planning, goal-setting, note-taking, and other things. I would suggest a separate eraser. The one on the pencil (under the cap) works great, but it's small, and while replacements can be found, they're not super cheap: Staedtler Mechanical Pencil Eraser Refill for Drafting Pencils 925 (92R) . Get a Staedtler Mars Stick Erasers (STD52850) instead. That thing is, for erasers, what this one is for pencils: a lovely and highly functional thing. Alternatives to this pencil: Staedtler 0.5mm Mechanical Pencil Night Blue Series (925 35-05) (the exact same pencil, except in a nice dark blue. I got the silver since it's easier to see (I don't wanna lose this thing again!) Staedtler Mechanical Pencil, 0.5mm (925 05) (the cheaper, plastic version of this one; I say skip it. Metal is glorious!) Pentel Graph Gear 1000 Automatic Drafting Pencil, 0.5mm Lead Size, Brushed Metal Barrel, 1 Each (PG1015A) (also a good alternative, but I prefer the Staedtler... its just feels nicer to me). Uni Mechanical Pencil, Kuru Toga Roulette Model 0.5mm (I haven't tried this one yet, but feel that it's not as classy-looking). rOtring 600 0.5mm Silver Barrel Mechanical Pencil (1904445) . A lovely pencil, but at this point, I feel you're paying more for the name. I bought one, and it was nonfunctional. Eventually, I may try for another. While you can't go wrong with any of those excellent pencils, the Staedtler silver is my fave, and likely to remain so. At under about ten bucks, it's a great value, and a lovely and functional piece of art I love to use and keep around.

An upgrade from the Staedtler Mars 780 ...
The Staedtler 2.0 mm Silver Series (925 25-20) is an all-metal mechanical pencil weighting 21 grams. The extra weight feels comfortable in my hand - better control. This pencil is quality built inside and out. I am amazed that Amazon is currently selling it for a little more than the Staedtler Mars 780 Technical Mechanical Pencil, 2mm. 780BK which has a plastic barrel and weighs only 13 grams. I own both pencils. The Staedtler 2.0 mm Silver Series is a much better pencil then the Staedtler Mars 780. The Silver Series works more like a mechanical pencil then a lead holder. It does not have the big gaping jaws at the tip. It advances the lead a little bit at a time like a normal mechanical pencil. You can always grab the lead and quickly pull it to a much longer length if needed. The pencil has an adjustable lead hardness degree indicator. I only use the Staedtler Mars Carbon Leads with this pencil. It is the best 2.0 mm lead I have experienced. PROS: - All metal construction. This baby is solid yet comfortable. It should last for years. - Adjustable lead hardness degree indicator. - Lead width indicator is on the cap. - Beautiful design and finish. - Heavier than the plastic 2.0 mm pencils - weights 21 grams. - It also comes in the color blue Staedtler 2.0mm Mechanical Pencil Night Blue Series (925 35-20) CONS: - Does not work with the rotary lead sharpeners. - It advances the lead like a normal mechanical pencil rather than a lead holder. The speed of lead advancement may be an issue for some people.

Excelent product!
It's really a high quality product. I have a variety of mechanical pencils that I used for different purposes. This one I used for fine sketches, being an engineer I truly appreciate accuracy. It's easy to grab as it doesn't slip and you can be sure what kind of lead is inside as now hou can mark HB, 2B outside. Pretty cool and useful. Staedtler is a brand that I have been using since I was student. Quality is what it is.

Writes great, but leads break
Fantastic Pencil, but the lead breaks too frequently. I love the way this pencil writes. It's fantastic. It feels nice and heavy in the hand. It writes smoothly. I used a 2B lead and it constantly broke. I switched to a Rotring 600 and never had an issue with breaking.

I upgraded to Staedtler from my Kuru Toga M450 (used for print style writing) and my Sakura xs127 (used for cursive style writing). Suffice to say, this one does a great job for both kinda writing. The metal build is sturdy, the silver looks so sleek and elegant! The pencil isn't as heavy as I'd thought and I love the balance. It doesn't even hurt through long hours of writing and drawing. I think the price is justified well for this pencil as opposed to my 150 bucks Kuru Toga and 350 bucks Sakura, which also do a fantastic job but doesn't quite match the Staedtler. Got it off the sale at 1.1k.
