Seemingly good value but poor quality.
Beike BK-45 Gimbal Head. After reading several reviews I decided to take the plunge and buy one of these. First impressions were - what a classy piece of kit and exceptional value for money! True, it had the typical Chinese tat useless extra like a compass which is mounted vertically and is thus completely useless unless you lay the tripod on the ground!. (Why do they do this?).Unfortunately my opinion changed after some use. The vertical rotation bearing was beautifully smooth in operation, just slightly damped. Perfect to use. The horizontal rotation bearing was a different matter. It tightened up at some points on the rotation. Stiff and slightly graunchy.I decided to investigate with the intention of, perhaps, fitting some roller bearings to solve the problem. It all came to light when I stripped the unit. No easy matter as the Chinese had used an excess of glue wherever they could. The problem was immediately obvious - there is no bearing!! Its a machined aluminium to aluminium surface with a tatty piece of thin plastic as a thrust washer. The machining tolerances are poor which the manufacturers have 'fixed' with copious amounts of grease to take up the slack. What a shame. For just a few quid more they could have fitted roller or needle bearings and made a superb piece of equipment. But they didn't, they cut corners to make it cheap and so it's not much good.
