But his clandestine life and precious secrets are threatened when he is caught thieving by the bitter old man who runs a toy booth at the station, and Hugo’s world becomes enmeshed with that of the shop owner and his bookish granddaughter. Scorsese + Arrow. What else do you need?
A weird film in the context of Scorsese’s work and the Arrow Video library, Hugo is the director’s attempt at a children’s film. Considering his children’s film is about an innovator of early 1900s cinema, I think it’s safe to say there’s a lot for adults too. It’s full of heart, humor, and history. A breathtaking 4K transfer with comprehensive extras mostly about Georges Melies.

The 3D Version Is Awesome
The opening sequence is magnificent in 3D, maybe one of the best 3D openings to a movie in existence. The first 2/3's of the film are 5 star quality but, unfortunately, the last 3rd drags the overall score of the movie down to 4 stars. The performances by Asa Butterfield and Sacha Baron Cohen make this movie a must see however, despite the boring and disappointing 3rd reel.Of note: this collection contains 3 versions of the film - the 2D and 3D versions, both in Blu-Ray, and the 4K version. All versions are of spectacular visual quality. There is also an excellent booklet (pamphlet?) included for the Hugo fanboys, as well as a poster and a raft of dvd "extras". The 5 star rating is for this entire collection and NOT for the movie itself (though the 3D version is awesome!)

Imaginative, visually striking & devoid of violence, Hugo is one of Scosese's best!
A true visual feast, Hugo, by master filmmaker Martin Scorsese, is practically made for 4K Blu-ray! The fabulously memorable images are taken up to the next level by the improved resolution and the additional depth of HDR.I love the fact that every once in a while Scorsese ventures away from murder and violence to experiment in other genres. This time he tried his hand at a family film and produced one of the best. It is visually imaginative, emotional and dreamlike, and also filled with excellent performances from child as well as adult actors of the highest caliber. It is ALL done so well! This is a film to please adult and child viewers alike, one of the few films an entire family can watch together and all ages will be thoroughly entertained by.Who would have expected such a thing from Martin Scorsese of all people! This disc set also includes the movie in 3D, and if you still have a 3D TV or have a projector (which usually still support 3D) I will note that Hugo uses 3D far more "artistically" than I've ever seen done elsewhere, composing the images in 3 dimensional space in a manner that is truly masterful. Being Scorsese's ONLY film actually CONCEIVED FOR 3D, he did not waste the medium and made it integral to the composition of the scenes, using the extra dimension very artistically, the way a master classical painter would have utilized 3D if it had been available to such masters at the time. It's a truly phenomenal and thoroughly memorable 3D presentation!Concerning the 4K disc:This 4K Blu-ray looks and sounds excellent (a noticable improvement over the streaming version on both fronts) and comes very highly recommended. As I said earlier, this movie's incredible imagery and fantastic visual sense is practically MADE for 4K!One of Scorsese's most unusual films, and one which is masterfully visualized in every conceivable manner, Hugo is a "must have" for both collectors of 4K Blu-rays and of 3D Blu-rays alike! And you actually get both included together here!Be prepared to be swept away by the visual imagery and emotionally moved by the wonderful story and fantastic acting in Hugo.I couldn't recommend the 4K Blu-ray set of this rarity, a visually spectacular movie with real heart, any more highly than I do!

Beautifully filmed ode to the silver screen!
I own this film on Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray and then bought this remastered deluxe 4K edition.I am particularly found of QUALITY 3D Blu-rays and although it is my preferred way to watch this film, the 4K Blu-ray brings a more “filmic” quality to movie made to honor our earliest filmmakers. The picture and sound are top-notch and both the 3D Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray are reference discs for mebwhrn showing off the various 4K OLED, 4K/3D OLED & newest 4K OLED televisions in my home. The packaging is also gorgeous so one cannot go wrong adding this film to their home movies collection. You wont regret your purchase!

Must watch masterpiece
I own the original 10 years ago 1080p bluray which at the time was reference quality. This remaster in 4k and hdr is demonstrated quality.A tribute to an amazing story. This is not a movie about a train station, a clock, and a bitter old man. This is a movie about what it is to be a member of humanity.Spoiler alert. Everyone is redeemed by the end. There is no evil or good. There is just us.

Arrow Video makes defective discs
Arrow Video the company that made this disc, I have learned makes several defective discs. Amazon lists this disc as frequently returned. I will never buy another bluray by Arrow Video as the company is very poor on producing reliable discs. The 4K disc, Hugo will not play at all. The opening title screen appears but the title screen just shows the title. There is no menu selections shown and no way to get the movie to play. Arrow Video is notorious for poor service and poor authoring of various 4K disc titles..
