Product description Chris Rea - New Light Through Old Windows (The Best of Chris Rea) - CD .co.uk The thirteen songs on this early Best Of collection take us from Rea's 1978 debut to the Dancing With Strangers album. New Light has since been superceded by The Best Of Chris Rea, which also includes material from Auberge and The Road To Hell. This selection, however, is in some ways preferable, since the songs all exhibit the looser performing style of his earlier years and their mix of soul, classic rock and MOR schmaltz sit together more naturally. Like his fellow Northeastener Robert Palmer, Chris Rea is hard to pigeonhole: if not a great guitarist he is at least very gifted, with a warm style that borrows from Keith Richards and Eric Clapton. Apart from the timeless "Fool (If You Think It's Over)", his songs tend towards the derivative, but his voice is rich and charming enough for this not to matter. Lyrically, he is always honest and unpretentious, and his evocations of his Middlesborough childhood, in "Windy Town" and "Steel River", are genuine urban romance. Rea has few real competitors in the art of the corny love song, and "Josephine" still runs away with the prizes. New Light is best heard by candlelight with a glass of red wine-throughout, it is beautifully produced, intelligent and exceedingly mellow. --James Swift

Ingenious greatest hits album
This is an ingenious greatest hits album where the songs are reworked. Most of the tracks are either every bit as good as the original recording or, in the case of "On The Beach" & especially the closing track "Steel River", are even better.Highlights for me are "Working On It", "Candles" & the aforementioned excellent closing track

Time to run a bath, its Chris Rea...
Picked this album up on vinyl in a charity shop for £1 - probably one of the best quids I've ever spent! Every track from the well known to the lesser known make the album a complete pleasure to listen to. There isn't a single bad song in sight - and it has to be said that Rea's music sounds fantastic on vinyl. This is Chris Rea at his finest and I see you can pick this up on CD for a mere 1p plus postage - If you don't have it (or the later "Best Of" album) - grab yourself a bargain, this is a real diamond of an album.

Had this on cassette during my teenage years, subsequently lost in later life.. I’ve always liked Chris’s music and when I was browsing through amazon I had a great idea 💡 and ordered the album. It’s now happy settled into my CD slot in my car enjoying being played at high volume wherever I go....

I am rediscovering Chris Rea & reaffirming what a very good song writer & musician he really is. The best of Chris Rea is a very good way to do this, or to have an introduction to this man's music. Excellent, the 5 stars are well deserved!!!
