I read this countless times as a child
I bought this out of nostalgia for a book I dearly loved as a child (the same edition). Between the age of 11 and 14 or so I must have read it a dozen times. I have not yet re-read it as an adult as I fear the Suck Fairy (google it) might have visited. But I'd recommend this to any young reader. Its evocation of the call of the wild not far from urban sprawl is thrilling; it's realistic and unsentimental. The introduction to the philosophy of Thoreau is subtle and may well plant a seed in a young mind.

Excellent book for junior age children
My wife bought this book. This is what she says...My mum, who was also my teacher read it to me when I was a top junior. I have subsequently read it to many classes of children, from all sorts of backgrounds and it has always been received with unanimous interest and joy. It has timeless appeal. I would thoroughly recommend this book.

Interesting story
For aa pre-teen this would be a great book to receive as a gift, or for summer reading. As an adult, I found it interesting from a wilderness-experience point of view. Truly a story set in a distant time when folks were free to come and go as they pleased.

Bought for 12 year old nephew.
Bought thus book for my 12 year old nephew. I was worried he would be too old for it, seen as the age bracket was 8-12, and that it quite a range.I was pleasantly surprised when I got a text out of the blue from him letting me know he hadn't put it down, and really loved it.My nephew is a book worm, so finding books he hasn't read yet is difficult, and finding books with interesting new themes is too.Very happy with this purchase.

Great
This book was a present for my husband to add to his collection and he is thrilled. It was in excellent condition and has given pleasure to him. Brought back some memories from reading it to his children! A good read for any age.

Fantastic
This is the first book that my 11 year old son has read cover to cover on his own. He has always struggled to enjoy reading but this book was perfect for him. It kept him interested and was just the right length. The second book 'on the far side of the mountain' has just arrived and I know he will be really excited to start reading it when he gets home from school.

Astonished that this still exists.
I remember reading this several times as a kid - one of my first 'proper reads' - I've fantasised about the great outdoors/making it on my own ever since. From memory I moved from this on the the Survivors on telly in the 70s. It all seems to fit together for me. The environmental message only really hit me now as I read it again to my son... he loves it too and was gutted about the ending. He's seven, I'm fifty, its all good...
