Cool prints, but....
Lots of really great prints here, but I have several problems with this book.1) the reproductions are not very good. Yes, the prints are just black and white, and how hard should that be to reproduce, but the paper is really cheap, and the black on it is very flat and the black not as black as it should be. (The ones on the shiny cover look fabulous.)2) While I didn't expect any explanatory text, I did want to know the sizes of the prints. Some of them looked like they were very small, and blown up way bigger than the original, based on what the marks look like, and some could have been much larger and vastly reduced, and it really seems like that's information that could easily have been put on each page, along with the artist and title of the work.3) There didn't seem to be much of a criteria for selection. Some artists were represented by only one print, and others by over a dozen, and it seemed to be more like what they had available to use rather than any kind of standard. One artist was represented by a large numbers of very simple faces (that seemed to me like were really small prints blown up), where they're all pretty much doing the same thing, which looked to me like "filling up the pages", and then there were other artists with only one or two that I would very much have liked to seen more of. I could understand a selection process of representing each artist by three or four prints, or by offering a selection of prints representative of an artist's work where the more print-prolific artists had more prints than the less print-prolific artists, but it seemed more like "Oh, we have available a lot from this guy, so we'll put them all in, even though they're not very good, and we only have a few available for this guy...." I have no idea whether this is true or not, but that's what it seems like.On the other hand, there is some stunning work in this book, and if you're interesting in woodblock prints, there is plenty to study here.

great powerful images!
this is a very nice anthology....having searched for various compilations on expressionistic woodcuts, this is the only one readily available at a fair price of 7-10 dollars while other anthologies are $30Plus..... one criticism is that quite a few artists get only 1 or at most 2 woodcuts presented, while a handful get 10-12 woodcuts each, and one artist has more than 20 of his woodcuts presented. thus, a great imbalance that focuses on 4-5 artists while another 20 artists get 1-2 woodcuts apiece depicted. but, overall , this is a great volume if you like this type of artwork...it is certainly not light, airy, cheerful or sweet syrup instead far more somber, dark, dejected, morose, or depressing with many depicting doom, sadness, madness, etc..... as for he quality of printing that other reviews mention, to me that is a minor problem as the powerful images depicted in these woodcuts is by far more powerful......also, not all the artists are German, but also the Norwegian Munch, and a small number of Poles (two or three artists), and maybe one Czech.....some really great powerful images!!

Excellent resource for German Expresionism!
If you are lookig for good illustrations of the best German expressionists this will do the trick. Nice large format images of the works. Introduction helps explain the genre of this style and there is limited but sufficent information on the artists represented inthe book.I would recommend this book.

German expressionism ghostly return
This is not an art review, this is a review of the delivered documentation that is perfect for the purpose. Now I could facsimile this review but its content wouldn't change its flavor

Inspiring woodcuts images
For someone starting out with woodcuts, this is a truly inspirational book. Has the feel of the original prints. Few words, excellent images. Endlessly fascinating.

Powerful Art of the Woodcut
This is essentially a book of illustrations - of woodcuts, over 100 of them, prefaced by a minimal description of the German expressionist scene. The illustrations are excellent quality, but the non-expert such as myself would have appreciated more of a narrative to accompany the excellent graphics.

Excellent value
Portrait 11" x 8" min. One page intro and two pages about the artists. The rest is 144 pages of black and white reproductions, one to a page. The repro work is excellent and the black print is sharp and dense. The paper is suitably off-white though a bit thin with some slight show through. The selection is strong and varied. Most readers will find things inside they won't have seen before. This is a book you will enjoy dipping into time and again. It is excellent value.
