Review: Walking Dead Graphic novel - Bought as a gift, a great series and may borrow them one day Review: When morality decays like zombieflesh - "They're going to feel pretty stupid when they find out." "Find out what?" "They're [messing] with the wrong people." While I thoroughly enjoyed volumes 9 & 10, I felt in many ways they retreaded old ground & that perhaps after improving with every volume, this series had finally hit its peak. But volume 11 totally proved me wrong, as it contains a couple of unexpected, incredibly disturbing & ethically murky scenes. It also made me realise that the last few volumes have been leading up to something... The survivors continue their journey across a zombie-infested America, heading for Washington & hopefully towards something resembling a government, while avoiding a massive heard consisting of thousands of undead. But when they get themselves into trouble & are forced to pitch camp, they find themselves being hunted by another well-armed group of survivors. However, after everything Rick & co. have been through & with Rick becoming more of a psycho with every turn of a page, who are the predators & who are the prey? If you've never read it before, don't mistake The Walking Dead for just another zombie story. I always felt zombie films & novels didn't quite have the guts to go far enough but this series takes up ever deeper into a horrific, amoral world where the full implications of having to do ANYTHING to survive are thoroughly explored. In that way, it's a unique, exciting & challenging read.

Liked it so much, I bought two!
I collected all of these editions of TWD as they came out. This one got damaged when an adjacent storage unit flooded and seeped into ours, so I purchased this replacement copy. For a new reader starting from scratch, though, I would suggest considering the larger compendiums that contain the equivalent of about four of these volumes, as those have additional content such as cover artwork from the original monthly comic book editions. Nonetheless, this is a very nicely formatted edition and still a much cheaper way of purchasing the series than would have been individual comic books. Nice on the shelf too.

Deadly Read :)
Have bought all the volumes for my son who is a massive Walking Dead fan. We do all watch the TV programme together, but he loves these graphical novels, they are very well drawn and the story is a little different from the TV program so if you enjoy the program I think these are a great read. :)

Not all monsters are undead
The zombies take a back seat in this the eleventh book of the series as Rick and the gang discover that not every thing that stalks you in the woods is undead. That's not to say the walking dead don't make regular appearances, just that they're not the biggest bad out to eat our heroes. Three of the cast die in this episode too and there is a new and not entirely welcome addition. As usual the story twists and turns in ways you would never expect and our heroes are faced with a terrible dilemna no one should have to face, but who will solve it? More great stuff and tempting me to buy more than one a month, perhaps the tv series starting on Friday will help me to resist!

Jamais déçue des Walking Dead malgré la longueur de la série. Je continue à suivre comme à la première heure (à l'inverse de la série télé qui m'a beaucoup déçue)

I've purchased all volumes up to 22 and the TV show has just about caught up to wear I am in the novels. These books are friggen awesome. I don't read much and my buddy lent me VOL 1 after he knew I liked the show. Well, I burned through the first one and then just went on a tear buying 4 volumes at a time...the price is pretty good for what you get out of these. $9-$15 is the range I've paid per novel, I'm not sure why they aren't the same but anyways, I keep buying them none the less. The story was written before the TV Show and the show follows the story but there is some differences. The written story is more violent and graphic then the tv show but the tv show does a decent job of sticking with main ideas. I've noticed that certain plot things that happen in the book also happen in the show but there is a unique twist like a different character it happens to or something like that. Which makes reading these volumes great cuz I have some idea of where the story is going (after having watched all tv episodes) but there are still surprises. If you like the TV show and haven't read these, give it a try and you will get a whole new experience of the Walking Dead story. I'm putting this same review under every volume I've purchased (1-22) so people can see it. go buy these!

FEAR THE HUNTERS! (The Walking Dead: Volume 11) Written By Robert Kirkman Illustrated By Charles Adlard & Cliff Rathburn Collects Issues 61-66 "A man's gotta eat. If it makes you feel any better...you taste much better than we thought you would." The first big story arc in a while, Fear the Hunters finds Rick and company still on the road, slowly running out of food, and options. Not to mention that they're being followed and watched... The first issue alone, #61, will give you a clue as to what to expect--and you'll be surprised at how quickly the terror begins and the fun truly ends. As they continue toward Washington, lives will be lost, bad deeds will be done, and a new character will be introduced. Then you just have to tell yourself that there are still five more issues to read before the collection is over... "I don't think I've had a chance to introduce myself before. I'm Chris, it's good to meet you. You probably think I'm crazy, and I understand that. Why wouldn't you? But I'm not, none of us are. I don't expect you to believe that, but it's important to me that I say it." Both Kirkman and Adlard have outdone themselves here, both the writing and the art are better than previous collections. Volumes 9 and 10 had me worried there for a little bit--our characters seemed to be going nowhere...and Washington seemed a little too far away. The new characters were fine, yet it still seemed like everyone was walking in circles, not doing much. Yet here is were it picks up pace--and it doesn't stop. "You know the drill--we have to keep these people scared. We should actually pick them off sooner, thin their numbers out and make them fear for their lives." Yet even though the writing and art are better, is the actually plot worth reading? The simple answer: yes! Although it is reminiscent of The Road , Fear the Hunters is more than worthy. In many ways, the Hunters are more savage and brutal than the Governor himself--and that's saying something. Whereas the Governor still had a shred of mercy for his daughter, these people...have no soul. They long ago ran out of food, and have taken to hunting down human and eating them--no matter what the age. "Cannibalism? How did it come to that?" "The simple answer? We got hungry. We're terrible hunters. You ever hunted before? Animals are quick. It's hard. You spend so much time finding a good hiding place--and waiting. It's almost pointless. So we decided to hunt easier game. People don't run from us. We were desperate." So although this volume was delayed because of National Comic Book Skip Week, throw all your anger away and buy it as soon as you can. If I have a single complaint about this volume, it's that it simply went by too fast...and that we didn't see more of the hunters. Well, who knows--maybe Kirkman will surprise us in later issues...Dang. I just realized now I have to wait another 6-7 months before volume 12 comes out. "Just came to ask you this. Will you stop coming after my people?" "In all honesty? Probably not."
