This is my second MDD brand hard drive. I needed a large capacity hard drive on which I could clone the contents of a much older drive that was running out of space. This drive was available at roughly half the cost of competing drives, and since I had an excellent experience with an earlier, 10 Tb drive purchase for this same brand, I decided to take it. This drive arrived very sturdily packaged. It was well boxed and in a strong wrapper that protects the drive. The wrapper has a note on it suggesting that you format the drive after connecting it (use "Disk Management" in Microsoft Windows to do this.) The drive also came with a 3 year warranty card and a second card repeating the advice to format the drive after plugging it in to a Windows system. This is good advice for new purchasers who are not familiar with how to prepare a hard disk drive. Other brands of hard drives don't include such advice with their products. They assume you know what to do. Since cloning one hard drive to another is simply a bit-for-bit copy of an already formatted hard drive, I used the Gnu 'ddrescue' utility to do the cloning. I did not need to pre-format. This utility is available for Linux distributions. I did the cloning on a Linux computer, in other words. The cloning process went very well. Then I installed the drive on a Windows 11 Pro computer, and used the Windows 11 Disk Management utility to extend the volume so that the entire available volume would be recognized. Finally, I completed the installation process by running the Windows chkdsk utility on the new MDD drive to make sure there were no issues with the drive. This is an excellent quality, very tough drive. It is roughly half the cost of other drives. That is a very attractive price point.

What else can i say? It works and has not had any issues. I bought a few of these drives for my security system and gaming rig. They are all working fine after a year. No bad sectors, no issues. I'm sure these have a shorter lifespan than new drives, but at half the cost, i can buy two. Im sure 10 years later they might break, but i don't ill have the same system then. I would not trust these drives for mission critical tasks, but my games have cloud saves and my security system has backups, so this works great. I use this with a ssd for caching reads and writes and games load pretty fast, so it does what i need. Your mileage may vary.

This is an enterprise level drive available at a surprisingly low price. My first drive worked so well I acquired 2 more for my my system to replace 2 very old 2TB NAS drives. Unraid pre-clears on all of the drives were flawless and installed in a modern case any potential extra noise from these drives is negated.

I'm about 5 months from purchase and outside of the 3-month return period. One of the four drives I purchased began to throw SMART errors for sectors going bad. I ran through some troubleshooting online and the number of bad sectors keeps increasing. Initially Amazon Chat told me sorry they couldn't do anything about it, so they told me to contact the manufacturer (they provided me an email address for the manufacturer). I emailed them, but nothing. For days. I contacted Amazon Chat again to update them on the situation and the agent kindly offered to refund the amount of the one faulty drive. Not saying everyone will have that experience, but it was a kind gesture after I attempted to do what they suggested. But don't buy these drives. Just don't.
