The Orvis Guide to Small Stream Fly Fishing

Small Streams, Big Book
Tom Rosenbauer's Orvis fly fishing guides are generally pretty good books. This one is no exception, notwithstanding the fact that it represents somewhat of a departure. The format of Small Stream Fly Fishing crosses over from information guide to coffee table book. It is large, hard covered, and filled with big (in some cases full page and even two page spreads) color photographs. The price is bumped up accordingly - this one is 35 bucks, about $ 10 more than others in the series. Is it worth it? Depends what you're looking for.Rosenbauer provides a solid overview of targeting trout in tiny waters and does a good job describing the particular charm of this kind of fishing. After reading it, assuming that you have basic fishing skills, you'll be ready to venture out and give it a try. And during those long winter months, leafing through the book and looking at the pictures will be a pleasurable pastime to help fend off cabin fever. But if you're looking for a lot of advanced technical information, Trout From Small Streams by Dave Hughes might be a better fit.

Small Stream Fishing - Like a Kid Again
As a kid, the only water I could fish were a few small streams I could bike to. Now, I can drive to pretty much any type of water to fish. But small streams still have that magic and challenge. This book unlocks the secrets and helps make small streams the delight they were to fish come alive again. Ample photos, clear and concise language make this a pleasant and easy read. (All that is missing is the sound of a rushing stream!) If you like the challenge of getting to, climbing around in, and trying to catch fish on a small stream, consider this the first source of instruction. Read it and your time on the streams will be more enjoyable.

Finally a book that actually honors it's own title!!
At first, I thought that I would find a lot of repetitive info, because I have read a lot of books from the same author, but I was wrong, as there is a very fresh approach to the subject. Excellent information, to the point, and I must say very practical, I was able to put into practice a lot of tips from the book just a few days after buying it, with excellente results. Also, makes clear a lot of myths regarding small stream fishing, like the need of puny diminutive tackle for this kind of fishing. The photography is first rate, too. And, HURRA!!!, no wasted space on general subjects like casting basics. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

A small stream fishing handbook
I teach trout fishing to children and adults, and I recommend this book wholeheartedly to someone who wants to learn small stream fishing. Tom Rosenbauer is a definitive expert on reading trout water and tactics, and his easy and open writing style paints a vivid picture for fishermen, from novice to experienced. I have fly fished for trout in rivers and small streams for 25 years now, and Tom Rosenbauer books have been with me for much of that journey. As a student of the sport, you can read and reread this books and gain insights as you develop skills and a base of on-water experience.

Excellent Book for the Novice to the Experienced!
While I am merely a newbie when it comes to Fly Fishing, I find this book to be an excellent guide and a great addition to my personal library. This book, along with my weekly listening of Tom Rosenbauer Fly Fishing podcast, have provided me with a wealth of information that has served as a great launching point for my new found venture into and my enjoyment of fly fishing. The text is very easy to read and very informative. Plus as an amateur photographer, I am amazed by the images contained in this book; they are fantastic and provide a great visual aid to the concepts the book portrays.

Fantactic book lots of information with great photographs
I have a lot of Tom's books. He is the best of the Orvis Company . This book has fantastic photos and loads of information you really can not find elsewhere. I do not open this book without wanting to go fishing in a Small Stream for trout as soon as I lay it down. The author has been fly fishing his whole life. He knows his subject very well. I hope some day to meet him and maybe go fishing.. Nice information, you need this book! It is one book I feel is great and is in my library.

Beautiful as well as informative
I am a big fan of Tom Rosenbauer's Orvis Fly Fishing Podcasts and was really excited to read one of his many books. This one seemed perfect as I live near many small streams. This book did not disappoint. I can't stress enough how beautiful the photos in this book are. Worthy of coffee table book status. Yet this book is very informative and also very readable. Tom discusses his many thoughts in plain and simple English. I will be reading this book again over the long and cold winter!

Somehow they took a small streams fly fishing guide and condensed his entire being into book form. After reading this I feel like I have gained months of hard-earned experience on the stream without getting my feet wet. Time now to put some of that to use with a fly, some clouds, and peace-giving solitude.Aside from imparting tremendous advice the pictures are worthy of any good coffee-table book.

Superb, informative read.
Great book for the small stream enthusiast, however you must remember that I the states everything is bigger I guess. Some of the pictures in the book of 'small streams' are bigger than the rivers I fish!!!

Very informative and clearly written. If I were to have one criticism, it would be that there are too many 'nice' pictures of streams that don't add much to the overall content value.

Un livre complet et très intéressant à lire. Parfois on se croirait à pêcher dans une belle petite rivière loin de tout.
