Fun and Scary Children's Short Stories
A lovely collection of short stories for children aged 7 years and upwards. There is something here for every young reader to connect with and enjoy. Each story carries a message that may help children overcome their fears or insecurities – from feelings of guilt, anger or loss, or simply how to be brave and stand up for yourself. The importance of being truthful is a message not only for children to learn, but parents too.Written with imagination and wit, with some scary scenes, but nothing too scary for the age group intended. An entertaining read that I enjoyed.

Lovely compilation of short children's stories.
Really lovely, the book contains some very lovely stories, Neil v"s the eel, and my favourite, which is about Lucy and her best friend, a cat called Leila. I actually shed a tear with this one. Lucy's parents hide the fact that her cat Leila has gone to cat heaven, they then try to cover up the truth, but the truth will always be discovered in the end.Lots of being afraid of shadows and monsters, a nice approach with pictures as well.Recommended especially as a first chapter book.

Great stories with great messages inside!
What a great book I've discovered! Loved reading these stories with my kids. They were kept engaged and wanting more! The stories are well written to keep kids attention and also deliver life messages without being obvious. Highly recommend this, worth a read.

A Smorgasbord of Insightful Stories
This collection spoke volumes about what it is to be a child on their journey to adulthood. It dealt with various young people and their journey to make meaning of themselves, their place in this world and the depth of their relationships with those around them. The rich and varied stories all have a common theme, that of painting a picture of self-discovery from the point of view of the child. It is testament to the writer's skill that it took me back to my childhood and made me reflect on my own journey.

Both interesting and quirky!
Be afraid was a quirky book. I loved the little drawings inside, they were lovely. The book itself was really well penned and contained some fascinating tales. The author has an interesting and engaging writing style.

A real connetion.
I read these stories to my young nephews last week. 6-8. For once, they weren’t stuck to a screen. When they visited this week, they asked me to read them again. The last story connected us to the author. Thanks for writing them, we’ll keep reading them.

Funny Bits
To be fair to the author, I'm not the target audience for this(I am not 7-14 years old).I can imagine little kids getting a thrill from many stories included here, but I did find them a little repetitive. It's kind of the same theme in each of them, face up to your fears. They are definitely not horror - in case as a parent you were wondering whether to buy it. Just a little bit scary and definitely strange.I do feel like there could have been more variety and some editing wouldn't go amiss. I wasn't too keen on the illustrations either, but what do I know, I'm a grown up! 🙂

A great book
My stepdaughter absolutely loves this new book she got for Christmas and she loves telling scary stories so it really helps come up with ones that make you think and give you reasons to not be scared. A scary story that turns positive.

MY GRANDKIDS LOVED THIS BOOK!!!
Be Afraid… A Little Book of Stranger & Stories For Kids by Zak Bellingham was one of the best gifts I got for my grandkids in years! My son and daughter-in-law went away for the night and I had the honor of being the baby sitter. I brought this book along because I planned on reading scary stories around the fire pit in the yard, but it poured so I created almost the same thing indoors. I got a campfire burning on the laptop and played eerie music on my cell phone. We made popcorn, smores, and hot chocolate and I read the stories aloud. It was the greatest night ever! The kids LOVED these short stories that are about monsters, witches, nightmares, etc., but they weren’t all scary such as Popcorn Animals, and The Invisible Boy. It was one of those “one more story and then to bed” night that went on way more than that. We read some more the next day and got through most of the book before the parents came home. I’ll save the rest for next time. BTW my grandkids range from 7-11. Zak Bellingham is an excellent writer in this genre. Get the book. You will love it!
