Recycle, reuse - make art.
I first became aware of Cas Holmes' work in a magazine article showing a piece of her work called 'Garden of Remembrance' (which is in her book Stitch stories). I have been interested in designing my own work using embroidery stitches and this has given me the inspiration to do this - and as they say 'think outside of the box. I love the fact she uses materials that she finds or just old used materials - pieces of clothing, paper - and recycles them into her work. I like her use of line drawings - drawing without taking your pen off the paper which gives interesting lines to sew over. She shows you different ways of printing and all the items you can print from including a child's dungarees! There are so many ideas in this book to use but it is not about copying her techniques it is about being brave enough to explore all the different skills she shows you and making them yours.

One of my best buys.
I have 2 bookcases of textile books & this rates among the best. I never throw away anything that 'may be useful' so Cas Holmes' approach to working is brilliant. Most textile artists know about incorporating paper & old fabrics in their work but the author opens up a world of possibilities of yet more mundane & so-called useless ephemera that may be given a new lease of life. The layout & illustrations are informative & attractive. The book is broken down into small sections so is good for swiftly locating a reference to another good idea/technique. I know that this is a book to which I shall refer time & time again particularly when I need inspiration having hit the equivalent of writers' block. Almost best of all, apart from a sewing machine very little of the recommended supplies are expensive or hard to locate.

A highly original book
Cas Holmes is such and interesting textile artist. This book is about found objects and opening yourself to the possibilities of using them in your work. Making something out of seemingly nothing. It makes you look around as you go about your business and see things you might have overlooked. And of course, it is always fantastic to see her work.
