The Earth Care Manual: A Permaculture Handbook for Britain and Other Temperate Climates

Having received this book last week, and initially being a little daunted by the size, I am absolutely hooked.The late, great Patrick Whitefield, has written this book in a way that makes a "new" concept understandable and achievable. He educates without bias and explains the more complicated theories and the simple processes in a consistent manner, which allows the information to be easily digested as you read.I have long been interested in finding an alternative way to live alongside the planet and others, and stumbled across Permaculture a few years ago. My initial optimism was somewhat knocked back, as so much of what I was reading, however interesting, seemed to be focused on climates that we simply don't experience within the UK. Permaculture, as a concept and an idea, originated in Australia and all of the original teachings stemmed from here. What Patrick has achieved here is he's adapted and worked with the original concepts and suggestions and applied them to the climate we have within the UK.This is, in my opinion, the go to resource for all things Permaculture. I'd also suggest this book if your looking at making some changes to your lifestyle and what to know a bit more about growing vegetables, creating energy, no dig gardening and how best to support Planet Earth.Highly recommended

In building a library to research/consider off grid micro farming, this is certainly one of the most useful reference books. Slightly heavy read cover to cover but packed with good information.When this becomes a compulsory text book for politicians - we might get somewhere

Really looking forward to reading this book, had a quick look and it is worth every penny, beautifully presented clear print and great illustrations, I was recommended by reading Perrine and Charles Hervé-Gruyer "Miraculous Abundance" which is also a good book on the subject. I am trying to produce a food forest garden in 2.5 acres of N. Herefordshire.

I bought a second copy of this book for a Spanish friend of mine who is trying to learn English and educate himself regarding alternative approaches to farming and food production methods. He was so surprised by the lateral thinking and pragmatic solutions of permaculture in its various guises. As an olive and almond producer he was shocked by how little he truly understood about his cultivation methods and fertilization regimes that are simply passed down from generation to generation without any great thought to alternative irrigation, fertilization and soil structuring...His eyes have been opened - he might now be able to save himself some serious cash on expensive manutactured 'super' non-organic fertilizers and become happy in the knowledge that his produce is ethically produced and healthier for all that.This is a detailed and extensive guide and reference tool in all aspects of land management and food production using alternative, tried and tested methods. As useful to those who see more natural processes and alternative approaches to farming on any scale as it is to the hard-core permies. A very rewarding book.

this book is an encyclopaedia of permaculture,it covers all aspects of life and how to live in a sustainable way.It also covers farming as well as gardens.You can read how it should be done and then decide how far you want to take it.Although it is expensive I think it is good value for money,I am pleased i bought it.Read it through once and then dip into it when you need particular information.

A knowledgeable, clear, practical handbook you will go back to over and again. Whether you have done the Design Course or are starting out to find out about Permaculture, this will serve you well on your journey. Useful illustrations and diagrams.

An essential reference book for anyone who lives in a temperate climate and is interested in Permaculture. Well written, clearly laid out and packed full of information on all aspects of living in harmony with the Earth.

Reading time is very precious, but I do enjoy having books over an e reader. So every permaculture book has something I need or something I should remember. This book is no exception, in fact this book should be a close second to the Mollison Designers Manual. It provides sound permaculture steps in a clear easy to read format with a lot of knowledge crammed into one book. It's heavy, like a Designers Manual, so it will not be carried with you everywhere you go. There is also too much information to memorize, so it will become a great reference tool. Possibly better than the Designers Manual as it is more focused on the temperate climate when the Designers Manual covers all climates.I had never seen the contents of the book before purchasing it, but I thought I would take a chance as it was referenced in the Aranya book contents and also on several website that I trust. While building my reference library, I have a limited amount of money like everyone else, so I plan my purchases carefully. This book has become a great find, with very few copies available in good condition at a reasonable price, I am extremely happy to obtain this one. I am told that Mollison made a state that the output of the yield is only limited by the designers imagination, if this is the case I want all of the ideas I can to obtain that yield and this manual will help.
