Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders. Review: Great War for my Grandkids - I bought a copy of this for each of my two grandchildren ( 5 and 7). Two of my uncles were killed in WWI; my mother never knew them as she was born in 1919, but there are photographs and the big gold medals. I would like the grandchildren to know about them and this is the perfect story - a lovely poem about two young friends that builds up as it goes, perfectly judged, affecting and not too frightening, and makes you cry and cry, like War Horse and the last episode of Blackadder 4. Would recommend to anyone trying to explain the next for years commemorations to those too young to know, and absolutely no glorification of war, just small but might acts of courage and endurance. A lovely book, and the illustrations are beautiful and moving things in their own right. Review: Beautiful illustrations - This book is lovely. The illustrations are beautiful and I would strongly recommend it for young children as it depicts war as it is but not in a brutal way. There is a message of love and friendship throughout the book and the ending is moving.

A beautiful and amazing book
So I wanted a book that would explain what the poppies on remembrance day were about to my five year old daughter. I rarely buy books new but as this one had such good reviews, I decided to give it a go. It did not disappoint. It is a true my beautiful book which was worth every penny. The book somehow brings home the severity of war without being too overwhelming for a younger child. My daughter is very sensitive and when she saw the fallen solider, she became very solemn and quiet as she took in what was happening. But as well as illustrating the harshness of war, it also celebrates the courage of the soldiers and the strength of friendship. I had to hold back the tears whilst seeing the friendship evolve. Today my daughter's school's remembrance service, she told me she remembered Ben and Ray and how the soldiers were so brave.

Things that we loved!
I bought this to share with my Y5 class. Fenia and Anna wrote the review for me. When we read the book, we thoroughly enjoyed it and and not just one page but all of it. Hilary Robinson is a truly talented author. This book will hit you deep. Also the illustrations were beautiful and nothing in the book showed the real horrors of war. We'd highly recommend this book for all ages. It was astonishing!

A really lovely story about two boys growing up and through the war together. The story is honest - but in my opinion kids need to know that soldiers did get injured and left for dead. The story had a very lovely happy ending. I highly recommend this if you want to explain Remembrance Day to your children and what the veterans sacrificed for us

Where The Poppies Now Grow is an absolutely beautiful book! After reading it I felt the deep bravery of the author for facing this topic with such integrity and without judgement. Handled with such a tenderness, it felt like this would've been exactly what these WW1 soldiers would have written. A terribly complex thing so beautifully, deeply and simply put.. evocative in bringing me totally into the story. I smelled, tasted and touched the field, the tree.... each scene... Hilary Robinson has written a true treasure.. If I was a soldier's mother and read this book, something in my soul would be ever so grateful to her.
