The Japanese Type 90 Tank development commenced during 1976, by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. It finally entered service in 1990. Its development was in collaboration with the German tank manufacturers Krauss-Maffei and MaK. As a result of this joint collaboration you will see many similarities with the Type 90 and the German Leopard 2. Production is now complete and the Type 90 remains one of the best MBT's (Main Battle Tank) in the World today. There were less than 350 units built in total due its very high build costs. The Type 90 has an all-welded hull and turret. It has a laser warning receiver and automatic fire suppression system. The main gun is the German Rheinmetall Rh-M-120 120mm smoothbore gun, which is produced, under licence, in Japan. The gun is fitted with an auto loader system, thus allowing a smaller crew to operate it, however, the down side to this is the gun must be depressed to 0° to reload after each shot.
