Creative Interventions for Troubled Children & Youth

This is a MUST-HAVE for every clinician who works with children!
I have gotten so much use out of this book in my work over the past few years since purchasing it. Lowenstein breaks down the different aspects of the work (assessment, identifying and expressing feelings, coping with feelings, social skills and self-esteem) in a user-friendly way. The different interventions that correspond with each phase are unique and attention-getting. For example, my use of the Darts activity with my magnetic dart board is a wonderful way to encourage problem-solving skills in a way that lets my clients release some physical energy and practice eye-hand coordination. Also a fun activity to have parents and children do together as a bonding experience to enhance family connection. Love this book!

I have found several of the concepts very useful in breaking down the barrier between my children and ...
I purchased this as a tool both for my future patients (Still working towards my Master's in Psychology), as well as a current parenting tool. Regardless of which way you want to use the contents of this book, it is very simple to follow, broken down into comprehensive exercises to help you understand your targeted youth, and assist them in opening up and sharing some basic, door opening information. I have found several of the concepts very useful in breaking down the barrier between my children and I in situations that used to be high tension. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was simply my own misunderstanding of the contents. I am still very happy I purchased it anyway! (Each 1 - 3 page "Intervention" is everyday games or activities such as hot-potato or pin-the-tail, but altered to achieve a therapeutic/ communication sharing atmosphere for the target audience. They could also be used for pulling out childhood memories from adults as well. I would highly recommend this as a tool for understanding.)

Every Clinician Should HAVE This Book!!!
This is one of my favorite resources to use with children and adolescents. The book offers a variety of games, exercises, and therapeutic tools to help children who are struggling. Chapters focus on emotion identification, coping skills, self-esteem, and social skills. This book is a must have for any mental health professional working with children. The activities give guidance for age group, treatment problem, and a of list material items needed for activities. The activities are hands on and give the children coping skills and tools to use in everyday life. I have used this book so much I had to tape the binding!!!! Liana Lowenstein's books are an invaluable resource for any mental health professional working with children and adolescents.Other books I highly recommend are: Paper Dolls and Paper Airplanes: Therapeutic Exercises for Sexually Traumatized Children Creative Interventions for Bereaved Children Creative Family Therapy Techniques: Play, Art, and Expressive Activities to Engage Children in Family Sessions

Comprehensive, Easy to Use Resource
Creative Interventions for Troubled Children and Youth is a wonderful resource, and I recommend this resource for any clinician working with children and youth. This book breaks down the activities into five categories (Assessment, Identifying and Expressing Feelings, Coping with Feelings, Social Skills, and Self-Esteem), so you can always quickly and easily find activities to suit your current needs (essential in a busy practice!). There is also an `At A Glance' section to help you determine which activities to choose from based on category, age range, and modality (group, individual, or family). Each activity is created to provide ease of use with the materials listed out, along with potential goals and a post-activity discussion component. I also love that the activities come with their own worksheets or use common materials you are likely to have on-hand or can obtain for minimal cost. I highly recommend this book.

Useful tool!
I bought this book when I was working with children with serious emotional disturbances. I worked with children ages 5-17. I definitely recommend this book for people who work with younger children, probably ages 5-10, as it is directed towards a younger audience. This book has some great interventions that are useful when working with children with SED, although I would recommend that you have some background in mental health. Many of the interventions can be done with few supplies, or use supplies that are easy to find or you might already have on hand. They are also easy to adapt if you want to change the way a game or activity is played.

Not appropriate for "Troubled Children and Youth"
I was disappointed with the interventions in this book. It's supposed to be for "Troubled Children and Youth." However, I work with troubled children and youth and there's no way that her interventions would work for this population. My biggest criticism of her interventions is that they require the participants to be able to work together in pairs and as a group. This is not a realistic expectation when working with traumatized children who have been shifted around to multiple placements. These children don't trust adults or the other children in their placements. My next criticism is that many of the interventions are for very young children. They are simply too corny for older children who come from the streets. Next, I found most of the interventions required a fair amount of equipment. People who work with traumatized children do not make a ton of money, and the agencies that handle these children do not have an extra dime to spend. Most are operating on shoe string budgets. After flipping through the book, I found that I could use maybe one or two of the interventions. This is not a good product for people who really do work with "troubled children and youth."
