Is the heel collar area soft like the Lone Peak 5?

Can these be used for everyday type sneakers and the occasional walking trial with moderate slopes or are these an overkill for that?

I have a wide foot and wear NB 9.5-10 W or XW would any of the Trail Running Shoes be a better choice?

Are these waterproof or water resistant at all? Hiking the rainforest & looking for a good match.
