Review: Great Look and Feel; Short on Practicality - The first impression, upon receiving the Jiandun Pilot watch might likely be, “Hey, must be a cool product; it comes neatly packaged in a wooden box with a leather latch. It sounds like a classy touch, though I’d advise you not to set your craftsmanship expectations too high on the box. But, hey, the box, with its padded interior, does provide a place to put your watch when you take it off, if you were wondering where to do that. The next impression is that this is a classy looking watch, much more classy than the box it comes in. The overall mechanical design and the stainless steel construction make for one very attractive watch, at least in my opinion. More than a cosmetic thing, the watch seems to be built with an eye toward precision. It not only has that feel, but the 100M “water resistant” rating speaks to the manufacturer’s confidence in the construction. I do wonder a little about the way it is rated, as “water resistant,” rather than “water proof,” usually infers that a product is resistant to things like rain, a splash from a sink, etc. But the 100M thing would make it appear that this guy is safe to take scuba diving. So I don’t quite know what to think about the manufacturer’s rating. Before using the watch, I needed to shorten the band to fit my skinny wrist, and the supplied instructions and special tool made that fairly simple. A special feature of this watch is the geared ring, under the glass, which is tuned by a large, easy-to-rotate, additional crown knob. Markings on the rotating ring, and those printed in a circle inside that ring, comprise a circular slide rule that designed to assist in calculating time of travel at a given speed, ground speed, distance travelled for a given time and speed, fuel consumption rate, flying hours on available fuel, etc. Unfortunately, I find all of the circular slide rule’s markings to be way too small to read, making those functions unusable. If you like to see the time at a glance, this may not be the watch for you. The face is very busy, a result of all of the functions included. Also, the hour and minute hands are small, while the numbers, one through twelve, are large. Not only are the hands a little small, but the white phosphorescent coating that makes them stand out against the black background, and allows them to glow in the dark, doesn’t extend over enough of each hand to make the position of each quickly discernable. When checking the time, reading the large numbers is far less important than seeing the relative position of the two hands at a glance. All in all, I give this watch a mixed review: looks great, seems well built, moderately priced, but not practical in terms of its pilot-oriented functions, nor easy to read with a quick glance, which is why I usually prefer an analog watch over a digital one.
