Too much uncertainty coupled with maintenance problems -- not worth the cost
I bought this machine. I returned it.It does exactly what it says it will do -- makes fabulous pasta dough in just minutes. I did not try pizza dough or cookie (biscuit) dough.Potential problem: The product illustration and text suggest there are three attachments available for this machine from HIC (Marcato's U.S. importer). Preliminary -- and I stress preliminary -- information from HIC via a retailer says, going forward, Marcato has decided to sell the machine only as a bundle, namely, machine plus three attachments: roller and two pasta cutters.Disturbing: Marcato haven't decided what to do for (to?) people who already purchased a 'bare' machine. If you're willing to pay $300 for a machine that makes dough for you, great -- you've found a solution. But I bought one with the certainty of buying the three attachments. (Atlas attachments don't appear to fit.) Out of the box, it appears solid and well-made, and seems to have enough power to handle a stiff dough. But if you want to attach a pasta roller or either of the two pasta cutters and go from flour and eggs to fresh pasta, you may be in for disappointment. So ... great dough-maker. Uncertain future as an end-to-end fresh pasta maker.Design flaws: Clean-up is neither as easy as it looks nor the manual suggests. Not only is the lid non-removable, but it has a lip on the back side of the machine that catches flour and dough crumbs and is difficult to clean. In addition, on the left side of the machine on the floor of the port for the dough paddle release door, there is a slot large enough to drop a quarter through. A small amount of dough easily can creep in the roughly 50-60mm opening and fall through the slot. Where does it go? There's no way to access the bottom/innards of the machine to clean out the inevitable detritus that will filter inside. At best, crippling; at worst, nasty.Bottom line: Despite my 4-star rating, I do not recommend owning this machine. I can make pasta (and, for that matter, pizza and cookie dough) with the machines I have and/or my hands. For $300, it's simply not worth the specialization. Even if Marcato would include the three missing attachments at, say, $400, I question the value. Factor in the inability to disassemble for cleaning, and I'd say Marcato needs to go back to the drawing board and come up with a powered machine as good as the Atlas manual machine series.Ending on the positive: My purchase of this machine led me to buy two related Marcato products: The Tacapasta drying rack is genius. The rack, with its transfer wand, makes pasta drying simple and efficient. Marcato's flour dispenser is a huge improvement over a flour wand and allows precise delivery of small amounts of flour for pasta, bread, biscuit, scone, and pie crust making.
