The Nun [DVD]

Not a bad horror film but certainly not great.
This is a real 'close but no cigar' horror. All the ingredients are there to make an effective (albeit formulaic) chiller in a similar vein to Insidious and yet it doesn't quite make it. The lead is a good actress (and stunningly beautiful btw) but some of the other performances are unconvincing and below par. The cinematography is good and the effects are more than acceptable, yet it still comes across as a bit cheaply done. Finally, the story is a perfectly reasonable horror set up and yet you're never drawn in enough to feel any sense of suspense or terror at what's going on.It's certainly not a bad film and is indeed way better than some of the risible, amateurish stuff you can find on Prime and it is entertaining. It just doesn't quite come across as a truly slick flick.

Anglo-Spanish Production
In the 1970s the British film industry dominated the horror genre, it later passed to the Japanese. Having now seen several Spanish productions, I have to say they are quite good in their production quality and acting skills. But most importantly, their stories are interesting and complete. The main flaw with many Hollywood and British horrors is the absence of a good story, often combined with a poor choice of 'new' American actors.

Don't watch it!!!
A bucket of rubbish. Poor acting, awful storyline. The reveal is wafer thin played out by the 'goofball' who suddenly becomes a religious poltegeist expert??!

Stale effort.
Banal horror outing partially redeemed by some reasonable steps. My main grips with this is that one character who throughout the film exhibits boorish and stupid behaviour, suddenly at the end inherits the wisdom of Solomon in order to explain the ludicrous ending. This film in no way re-invents the wheel. Rather it is a by-the- numbers effort which ultimately falls flat.

"Yeah, we kind of forgot about Joanne."
An alright, if not a bit by the books horror movie. The special effects and some very beautiful sets are pretty much the highlight. The lead character 'Eve' is played by a girl whos acting talents (especially her voice) remind me of Anna Faris as Cindy in the Scary Movie franchises. The big issue I have is the reveal at the end - the idiot goofball character suddenly figures everything out...and explains five of the six deaths of the 'targeted' characters...but wants us to forget that the sixth death in unexplainable with the reveal - the girl, who's only referenced, Joanne who died in England (burned alive, yeowch!). The reveal doesn't say anything about how that could have happened.Unless you really like ghost stories or religious based horror, give it a pass.
