Marvelous work
Beauty Born of Struggle, The Art of Black Washington is a modern day work of art, which is evidenced even in the book cover choice, which lures readers to look inside to see what other treasures may be hidden between the pages. Having read Dr. Stewart’s Pulitzer awarding winning work, The New Negro, I was not surprised at the author’s wealth of philosophical and historical knowledge he brings to this work, making this work a rare fine . This book reminds me of growing up in America and not seeing the beauty of struggle in my own culture. Here, the author establishes for the world to see, irrefutable evidence drawn from blood, sweat and tears, a gift of black achievement in art that should be a part of every household and every school from elementary to graduate schools of higher education. Reading of influential artist like David Driskell, Sam Gilliam, Lois Mailou Jones , and Alma Thomas who tell their story in their own voices makes this book hard to put down. This book will not disappoint, hopefully it will inspire a new renaissance in this generation, and generations yet unborn. It is well worth the cost for such a masterpiece.Dr. Leroy Odinga Perry

Outstanding resource
Purchased this as a survey of AA artists and movements. Images are great and essays well written. Will be reviewing, reading and sharing this title for many years to come.
